Dear Parents
I just wanted to briefly express my gratitude to all in our KGV school community, for how we have supported each other this week, as we reverted back to online learning. After communicating a school closure at 7:00 pm on Tuesday night, to then be able to continue with online learning the very next morning, is testament to the resilience of our students, and the expertise and professionalism of our staff. It also reflects the proactive attitude of our parents, to facilitate and support learning in the home environment.
We are on track to open our school on Monday, 22 March and to complete the last week of Term 2. Our two community members identified as close contacts have continued to register negative tests, and this reinforces the CHP directed school closure as a precautionary measure. A specialist cleaning firm undertook a deep clean and disinfection of the school on Thursday, in preparation for our return on Monday.
All staff are again undertaking COVID testing on Monday, as part of our 14 day testing cycle. This will enable all students to return every day next week until 1:00 pm, with Period 5 online in the afternoon.
I once again thank you, our parents, for your support and patience over the past few days. Your understanding and measured response to the closure was appreciated. It is during times like this, that we truly do cherish and appreciate the goodwill and support of our KGV community of parents.
Kind Regards
Mark Blackshaw
Dear Parents
We hope the last three days of online learning have been productive and the students have been engaged. Thank you for your continued support as we navigate these unprecedented times and being able to adapt when needed.
We are very much looking forward to seeing our students again on Monday for Period 1 - 4 face-to-face learning. Please remember to record your child’s temperature in the ESF App on Monday morning.
A reminder that students are currently making options for their Year 8 Creative and Performing Arts courses. Students should go onto their LIONEL data hub page and click on the Y7/ 8 Options icon, where they will select the 3 courses they would like to continue studying next year, from Music, Drama, Art and Media. If students have been successful in their applications for the Music Academy, they will simply click the Music Academy box.
Teachers and tutors have been speaking to students about these options over the past week.
Students have until 25 March, 5:00 pm to make these decisions and enter this into LIONEL. After this date, I will be contacting parents to seek confirmation that they support the option choices made.
Next week is our final week before the holidays. Monday to Thursday is the transition period for the summer uniform. This means, on these four days, students can choose to wear their ties or not. After the break, summer uniform begins, and the ties disappear. Friday 26 March is our rescheduled “Wear a Hat Day” and students can dress casually. Friday is a half-day as we lead into the Easter Break.
Have a lovely weekend
The Year 7 Team
We are very hopeful that all of our Year 12 students will be back on site on Monday to resume face-to-face learning. It is our uniform transition week and a school tie is no longer required. Friday 26 March is our rescheduled “Wear a Hat Day” and students can dress casually.
Following on from the Elevate Online course students completed in November called Study Sensei, the follow up course for our students is Time Management.
In Study Sensei, students learned how the top students get the top results. Our students can still access this course.
How though, do they find the time to fit in study and maintain a life? Time Management will teach students how to create a study timetable they can stick to; identify and complete the most important work, reduce the amount of work and beat procrastination.

Please note that Friday is a half-day as we lead into the Spring Break.

We were planning to send out a Term 2 assessment summary at the end of next week, but this will need to be delayed now because assessments could not be carried out this week and need to be rescheduled.
We hope to have this ready a week after the spring break.

Year 11 assessments
This year, subjects with the Cambridge exam board will have external examinations and grades will be determined by the exam board based on performance in these exams.
The examined subjects are: Business Studies, Chinese, Computer Science, Drama, English, Geography, ICT, Korean, Music, Sports Studies and World Literature.
All other subjects will offer a final assessment to ensure that all course content is assessed and so that students have one more chance to prove their knowledge. These assessments will form part of the basket of evidence used by our teachers to determine grades. These assessments will be scheduled before, during and after the external exams to avoid bunching and to allow students time to focus on each assessment to do their best. Teachers will let students know the topics that will be covered in these assessments before Spring Break next week.
We will share a draft timetable with students early next week to get feedback from them and tweak it if necessary.
Similar to past years, study leave will start in week 3 next term and the last day of timetabled classes for Year 11 will be Friday, 23 April.
During the study leave period, subjects will offer online tutorial sessions for students to seek help. Students can also email their teachers any time to set up an online meeting or get questions answered.
Studiosity is also available to support students - see below for details.
If you want more detail on how teachers will determine grades for the non-examined subjects, please see the Pearson Student and parent support page here.
These procedures will apply for all subjects not listed above.
Studiosity
The service lets your child ask a study question and get help from a real subject specialist in real-time, whenever they need it, after-hours. This includes times when teachers aren’t available such as at home in the evenings, on weekends, over holidays, or even on the bus or train.

Please speak to your child about these option choices.

Our Remarkable Story
Huge congratulations to Kevin who won the individual first place trophy in Year 7-8 in the Inter-ESF Maths competition.
Kevin would like to share his thoughts with you:
My experience at the Inter ESF Maths Race is to do your best to revise it before the competition. But in order to get a good result, you will need to revise often. As I believe everybody knows 'No Pain, No Gain.'. The more effort you put into it, the better results you will get!
When you're up to a Question that you think it's Tricky/Hard, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Always remember the word 'Calm'. Always stay calm. This is a very important step in solving hard/tricky questions. If you really don't know the solution for the question, skip it and do the next one. Until you finished the others, come back to this question and start thinking about all the formulas you learnt, organize them to see which are useful. But still, 'No Pain, No Gain.'. You'll need to revise often to get a good result.
