Principal's message

Dear Parents

We appreciate that there are still COVID related challenges in our community and around the world. I wanted to especially acknowledge our students and parents with relatives, friends and loved ones in India and other places around the world that are severely impacted by COVID, at this time. We appreciate the stress and worry the situation may be causing some in our community. A reminder that our students can access our School Counsellors for support by emailing student.support@kgv.edu.hk

We are also doing all we can to support our Year 11 and Year 13 exam groups this week, and in weeks ahead. Our teachers are available by email and also online during the normal scheduled lesson times. Please encourage ‘your child, our student’ to reach out, if they need any academic or emotional support.

It has been a pleasure to meet the students and parents of our incoming August 2021 Year 7 students across the past three weeks. Due to COVID restriction, we have organised over 12 repeat sessions to enable us to meet all our students and parents in small groups. The feedback has been really positive with attendees enjoying a tour of the school, an information session and the chance to try on the KGV uniform for the very first time!

It has been great to see over 500 students in school from 7am each morning across the week taking part in over 25 co-curricular activities. The students seem to really enjoy the range of activities and the early morning exercise. We are looking forward to offering activities after school as well, as soon as we are able to move to a full day model.

Have a good weekend.

Kind Regards

Mark Blackshaw

Year 12 Message

Our Year 12 students received a breakdown of their Term 3 Assessment schedule this week.

Certain subjects have requested that their Assessments be held in the school hall, in order to give our students an experience similar to examination conditions. These assessments will now be held during the week beginning Monday 7 June. Subject teachers will continue to provide further advice to students on the exact material to be assessed.

Wishing you a great weekend.

Rory Mckeague (rory.mckeague@kgv.edu.hk)

Year 13 Message

Some of our Year 13 IB students have now started their examinations, as of yesterday.

We are obliged to remind our families that students should not proceed to school if any one of the following cases apply:

• they have Covid-19

• they have any Covid-19 symptoms

• a member of their family has Covid-19

• a member of their household has been placed in mandatory quarantine by CHP and the student has not completed a mandatory COVID19 test with a negative result.

If a student cannot for any of the above reasons attend an examination they must contact the school as soon as possible so that the school can inform the relevant examination board to make alternative arrangements if applicable.

Students must take their temperature before they leave home each day and have a fully completed health declaration for their examinations.

We wish everyone the very best of luck during this period and would like to remind all of our students to continue to reach out to our Year 13 team for any help or advice you feel you may need during this time.

Wishing you a great weekend.

Year 7 Message

Dear Parents

It has been so lovely to see so many of our Year 7 students participating in the early morning co-curricular activities on offer at school at the moment. The quads have been filled with volleyball and badminton, the pool full of enthusiastic swimmers and the field littered with sports from hockey to basketball! Finally, Year 7 students get to see a little bit about what KGV is all about!

We will be spending some time next week reinforcing some of our expectations, to ensure the academic year ends on a high and your support at home with this would be most appreciated;

  • Uniform: please check students have belts (boys) and black polishable shoes. Hair colouring should only be natural tones.

  • Mobile phones: at KGV we have a disconnect-to-reconnect policy. From 7.30am students should not use mobile phones, ear phones and laptops in the piazza, field, corridors. Any work which needs to be completed can be done in the LRC

  • IB and GCSE examinations: students will notice certain sections of the school closed off to corridor access over the next two months, as we maintain silence outside exam venues. Students will need to choose alternative routes around the campus when their normal route is closed off.

Have a great weekend.

The Year 7 Team

Dear Parents

It has been so lovely to see so many of our Year 9 students participating in the early morning co-curricular activities on offer at school at the moment. The quads have been filled with volleyball and badminton, the pool full of enthusiastic swimmers and the field littered with sports from hockey to basketball! Finally, we get to see a little bit of the ‘normal KGV’.

Well done to all students for their hard work in Monday’s Community Project Day. There are some amazing projects in the making and I look forward to reporting more on these in the coming weeks.

Year 11 Message

Students have been completing their Visual Art work this week and we had the final Maths assessment on Thursday. Next week will be assessments involving all students for Chemistry and English with Geography for some as well.

Please be aware that students should not proceed to school if any one of the following cases apply:

  • they have Covid-19
  • they have any Covid-19 symptoms
  • a member of their family has Covid-19

In my previous newsletter articles I have outlined the grade determination process. There is nothing new to report except that we are working with our teachers to ensure we have a consistent approach that closely follows the guidance from the exam boards. Detailed information for parents and students is available here.

Plans for the post-exam activities are firming up. They will run from Thursday 10 June to Friday 25 June and will include in-school preparation for Year 12, a final assembly and events to mark the completion this stage of school and some Challenge Week type activities. Students can choose from a list of activities, some of which will involve costs and require parent permission. We're trying to finalise these now and will publish to you asap.

Our Remarkable Story
Jeffrey recently uploaded a 1-minute video to the National Math Festival regarding his view for future Math class. His video was screened at the National Math Festival on Friday, 16 April. The National Math Festival is going to provide US$500 of Mathical Books to KGV.

Jeffery would like to share his thought with you -

I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for the guidance Ms. Vaze has given me over the past couple years. Ms. Vaze has always inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and try my best. My dream is to become a Mathematician. My goal is to bring Math to life and make numbers fun and meaningful to everyone.

Last but not least, thanks so much Mr. Blackshaw for always encouraging us to be "our own remarkable". It is through constantly challenging myself that I become a more informed global citizen. I will keep learning and I hope to share my knowledge with people and make the world a better place."

Well done Jeffery!
