Dear Parents
It has been a positive week at school, with students engaging strongly in classroom activities, and a growing variety of extra-curricular options.
In major developing news, KGV will be looking to resume full day face to face classes from Monday 24 May. This week, we submitted our Return to School Plan to the EDB, for approval. This plan documents the health and safety processes that we will instigate as part of the return to school process, to ensure that we fully comply with CHP and EDB requirements. The safety of students and staff remains our highest priority.
The main aspects of our plans are:
Maintaining the current timetable as much as possible, with an 8:15 a.m. start and now, 3:20 p.m. finish
Keeping the short mid morning break in Tutor time, and also the ‘longer break’ to enable the eating of lunch across a range of venues over the 1 hour and 20 minutes period
Keeping our before school extra curricular activities going, and adding additional House competition activities, for students during lunch break
Maintaining our current Period 5 swaps, as staff have already planned for these rotations
We are looking at the possibility to provide some limited canteen services, during the long lunch break
Finishing as normal at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, with work for Period 5 on Monday set online
We hope to confirm all these plans, and communicate with you by mid next week. We will also start to communicate with the bus companies to let them know of the upcoming changes.
It is exciting to be finishing the year off strongly and to have our students back in school all day. We appreciate that the current challenges are not over, and we will be maintaining our vigilance regarding mask wearing, social distancing, and other health and safety measures.
Like always, we appreciate your ongoing support and flexibility to adapt as we account for the changing pandemic situation.
I hope you all have a good weekend.
Mark Blackshaw
Principal
As we move towards the last week of IB Examinations and the conclusion of our BTEC courses, we encourage all of our Year 13 students to continue to reach out to our Year 13 team if you have any concerns or queries over the coming days.
We would like to remind all of our graduating Year 13 students to register for the Graduation ceremony as soon as possible, please.
Wishing you a great weekend.
The schedule for Year 12 assessments being held in the hall, week beginning Monday 7 June is shared below.
We would like to remind all of our Year 12 students to reach out to your subject teachers (or any of our Year 12 team) if you have any further queries regarding these assessments.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Year 10 students are having 1:1 conversations with their tutors as part of our regular check-in cycle. We are looking at all the academic data as well as discussing how they are feeling about school. Parents are encouraged to look at the summary of data and ask their child about it, identifying areas of strength and areas for development. The summary data can be found through the app, in the CCF section of Lionel under the heading "Overview".
Please note that we are switching our late notification system back on this Monday. Students have been reminded of the importance of punctuality.
Year 11 students have completed exams for ICT, Chinese, Korean, Physics, World Lit and Computer Science this week. There are many exams to come and we encourage parents to talk about the schedule and how revision is going and to monitor sleep, exercise and any anxiety. Let us know if we can help in any way.
On Tuesday we published the draft calendar of events following the Year 11 exams and asked students to sign-up for the two challenge week-like days at the end of the calendar. Please discuss this with your child as some of the activities are off-site and some incur costs.
A reminder that information about the teacher assessed grading process for the non-examined subjects this year is available here. Year 11 teachers are engaging with this process now.
Dear Parents
With the news this week that we may be able to have students in school all day in the next couple of weeks, the Year 7-9 team is busy planning activities for Year 7 students which will promote a sense of belonging and year group identity. We hope to use lunchtimes to provide students with the chance to make new friends, get involved in a range of activities and see what the KGV community has to offer!
We are also busy organising tutor groups for next year. Year 7 students will move into their new Year 8 tutor groups for next year. Students in Year 8 & 9 form mixed tutor groups, where they learn from one another as they progress through the final two years of their MYP. We will have information out to students in the next 10 days regarding who their tutor will be for the next academic year. We will also provide time for students on 28 May, to meet their tutor and the rest of their new tutor group.
Please be aware that we are switching back on our LIONEL function of tracking student punctuality. Students must swipe in school before 8:10 a.m. every morning. Their arrival time is recorded in LIONEL. If a student starts to develop a poor punctuality record, tutors will reach out to students and parents to see how we can support the family in this matter. We will work together to help understand any issues which are causing students to be late to school.
Have a great weekend.

Community Project update: It has been great hearing from some groups with an update on their action. However, we would like to hear from more groups about what they have been doing for their ACTION so we can celebrate the excellent work going on. Students are encouraged to post on the Google Classroom:
A photo of ACTION happening (could be a screen shot or other)
A short explanation of the ACTION taking place.
If students are planning to hold a school-based action, they will receive a google form asking them to submit their plan for that week (note it’s not compulsory for groups to do a school-based action). The form will ask for specifics such as days, date, location etc. It should be a great week with different projects showcasing their work
Have a great weekend.

The KGV Careers Office also shares a lot of information on higher education via different channels/platforms.
From KGV Careers & H.E. Team
This week Year 12 student leaders created and delivered an outstanding lesson for all Year 10 PSHE students in collaboration with social enterprise Dialogue in the Dark (DITD) as part of their CAS.
Zareen, Noelle and Edgar contacted Dialogue in the Dark to support our visually impaired community. They and their 25 sign-ups attended two workshops and then created the session, which they thought would be great to integrate into the PSHE curriculum.
The social enterprise aims to connect people with disabilities to the broader community. The main goal is inclusion. The presentation focuses on scenarios depicting situations where people of differences may struggle, how we can be of help if needed, the technological tools available, and their advantages and disadvantages. Year 10 students create a presentation or audio description for the visually impaired to use in the two follow-up lessons.
We will give the presentations/ audio descriptions to Henry (Our visually impaired representative from DITD who is fluent in English), who will decide on the winning group!

Mr. Jim Rowark passed away on Friday 7 May. He served KGV from 1980 to 2007. While he was here, he had set up the KGV Economics Department. He taught both Economics and History, coached Cricket and Rugby.
He is well known in Hong Kong and earned his rank as a member of the Hong Kong Rugby Union Hall of Fame.
We are saddened by the loss of this beloved teacher, staff and friend.
We're thrilled to share a video that Yannis was involved in the only all-inclusive orchestra and we made a beautiful video at HK Disney Land the other day. The music video was premiere launched on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram.
