Dear Parents
Great news! Late yesterday we received approval from the EDB to resume full day face to face classes, starting from this Tuesday, 25 May. We will continue to comply with CHP and EDB expectations regarding COVID health and safety measures. The safety of students and staff remains our highest priority.
We are hopeful that these new arrangements will then remain unchanged for the last five and half weeks of the term, up until 30 June. Monday is unchanged, and students will continue to leave school at 1:00 p.m.
We will communicate the new arrangements to our students today via email and on Monday via online assembly during Tutor time. The main aspects of our plans are:
Timetable:
We are maintaining the current timetable as much as possible, with an 8:15 a.m. start and 3:20 p.m. finish from Tuesday to Friday
We will continue with our 1:00 p.m. finish on Monday, with work set online for Period 5, Monday
Students will have a long lunch (1 hour and 25 minutes) to enable eating in supervised designated lunch spaces, and to participate in extracurricular activities and House competitions
Eating:
Students can continue to consume a hand held snack at first break in Tutor time at 10:20 a.m.
Students can also have lunch in a supervised designated eating area from either 1:00 p.m. to 1:25 p.m. or from 1:35 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. We will communicate these arrangements in detail to students on Monday.
At this stage, we do not have Canteen services available, so students need to bring their own packed lunch. We are working with our canteen contractor Sodexo, about the possibility of starting some limited canteen services in the weeks ahead.
Extracurricular activities:
We will keep our before school extra curricular activities going, and provide additional House competition activities, for students during lunch break
Due to the long lunch break, we recommend students wear a hat, apply sunscreen and make sure they have a water bottle which they can refill at our water stations at school.
Buses:
We have contacted the bus companies, and they are aware of the new arrangements that start next week
It is exciting to be finishing the year off strongly, and to have our students back in school all day. We appreciate that the current challenges have not gone away, and we will be maintaining our vigilance regarding mask wearing, social distancing, and other health and safety measures.
Like always, we appreciate your ongoing support and flexibility to adapt as we account for the changing pandemic situation.
I hope you all have a good weekend.
Mark Blackshaw
Principal
This week marked the end of the IB examinations and our BTEC students will also be completing their studies by the end of today. All parents are invited to visit the BTEC Art exhibition when attending graduations next week.
Thank you to the families who have completed the form to let us know if they are attending the Graduation Ceremony and the number of guests who will be coming. Please complete this as soon as possible if you have not. Note that the form only works with a KGV student account.
Please view the Graduation Invitation and Health Declaration here.
Please print one copy of the Health Declaration per attendee. It must be filled in on the day and brought with you to access the school site.
I hope the invitation makes the arrangements for next week clear. Just a gentle reminder as we are still working through the pandemic protocols to maintain social distancing between yourselves and others, continue to wear your masks and to bring a water bottle with you. There are water stations located around the school for you to use.
We are very much looking forward to celebrating this occasion with you. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Wishing you a great weekend.
We look forward to welcoming students back to full days of school from Tuesday next week. Please remember to pack a lunch, water and spare facemasks for the full day.
On Friday 28 May, Year 10 students will get to meet the students joining their tutor group from Year 9 and will say goodbye to the Year 11 students in their tutor group a few days later.
As Mr Blackshaw has already stated, we are very much looking forward to having our Year 12 students on-site every day for the full day from Tuesday next week.
A reminder that the schedule for Year 12 assessments being held in the hall, week beginning Monday 7 June is shared below.
We would like to remind all of our Year 12 students to reach out to your subject teachers (or any of our Year 12 team) if you have any further queries over the weeks ahead.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are very much looking forward to having our Year 7 students in school full time from Tuesday onwards! We appreciate that this is yet another change, but for us it is a positive step forward to enabling us to show Year 7 students what KGV is all about. We plan to use the extended lunch time to organise House activities and host events where students can come, play together and meet new friends. Please can you spend some time this weekend talking through this change with your child, in particular the need for them to bring a packed lunch with them each day and have all the materials they need for their 5 lessons. Please read carefully Mark Blackshaw’s post in the newsletter and contact your child’s tutor if you have any questions.
One detail to note for Monday, is the 1:00 p.m finish, with Period 5 work being set for students to complete at home. School bus companies have been informed and are prepared for our 1:00 p.m. finish on Monday and 3:20 p.m. finish from Tuesday to Friday. Students will only need to bring a snack on this day and not a full packed lunch.
Students who have PE or Drama lessons may continue to wear their PE or Drama kits for the full day. However, given the hot weather and 85 minutes running around at lunchtime, we recommend that students bring a spare PE top to change into. We also recommend that students have a hat to wear at lunchtime and bring sun cream!
This week we have had ten of our Year 7 students being ‘shadowed’ by either their tutor or Head of Year. KGV staff want to find out first-hand about the Year 7 experience and what it is like to be in the shoes of a Year 7 student for a day. We have more staff ‘shadowing’ over the next couple of weeks. I look forward to sharing with you our findings later in the term. Below are a couple of our students heading off for the day with their tutor/ Head of Year. They all had an amazing day!
Next Friday is ESF Transition Day. This is when Year 6 students come and visit us for the day. We also invite into school new students who will join us in Year 8-12 from next academic year. In tutor time next Friday, your child will meet with their new tutor for next year, as well as their new tutor group.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 7 Team
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are very much looking forward to having our Year 8 students in school full time from Tuesday onwards! We appreciate that this is yet another change, but for us it is a positive step forward to enabling us to show Year 8 students what KGV is all about, after having missed so much ‘normality’ over the past 2 years. We plan to use the extended lunch time to organise House activities and host events where students can come, play together and meet new friends. Please can you spend some time this weekend talking through this change with your child, in particular the need for them to bring a packed lunch with them each day and have all the materials they need for their 5 lessons. Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are very much looking forward to having our Year 9 students in school full time from Tuesday onwards! We appreciate that this is yet another change, but for us it is a positive step forward to enabling us to remind Year 9 students what KGV is all about. We plan to use the extended lunch time to organise House activities and host events where students can come, play together and meet new friends. Community Project update: As we approach the final week of May, students should be fully engaged in the planning or the taking of their group action. Some groups have submitted a plan to hold some small events during the week so I look forward to seeing their creative ideas during and before school.
It is important that students keep evidence of their action so we would like to hear from more groups about what they have been doing. Students are encouraged to post on the Google Classroom:
A photo of ACTION happening (could be a screen shot or other)
A short explanation of the ACTION taking place.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 9 Team
Year 11 students were sitting Sports studies, Business and World Literature exams today. Next week we have Chinese, Music, Business and Drama.
Students have chosen the activities they would like to do on 24 & 25 June and I am writing to parents and students to confirm these over the next few days. For some activities there is a cost that we will need to invoice parents with very soon. The calendar showing an overview of all the post-exam activities is here. Note that the first day back in school following the exams will be Thursday, 10 June
The internal Teacher Assessed Grades process is underway within the school for the non-examined subject this year and information about this process is available here.
Some families are writing to us about changing option choices for next year. Please note that there is an option change process for all students within the first few weeks of next term, so please hold your requests until then.

Dear KGV Students, Staff, Parents/ Guardian's,
Our BTEC Art and Design Students work effectively across two departments in school – Art and Design Technology.
Year 13 Designers present a learner-centered approach to their education. They investigate a theme focused on biological entities throughout units 51 and 111, delivered in Design and Technology. Our learners discuss and test the explorative nature of CAD (computer modelling) CAM (computer aided manufacture) and a wide range of sophisticated manipulated fabric processes.
This vocational program offers scope for deep levels of creativity, interpersonal and thinking skills that are required to be successful in employment and higher education. We have enabled our students to experiment and innovate with 3D printing technologies’ available in the DT department. They examine critical making skills through Nature Tech and Biomimicry.
We have encouraged a multidisciplinary practice and knowledge transfer from specialist areas. The results express development of foundational skills in image and mark, fashion / wearable, form, usability, product design, industrial design, and CAD.
A pop-up exhibition will be available to view in The Foyer and LRC throughout next week Monday 24th May to Friday 28th May. Please take a moment to engage with this impressive snapshot of transdisciplinary learning from our remarkable students.
Many thanks in advance from Ms McDaid and Mr Lee.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We write to inform you that as of 24 May 2021, KGV Physical Education Department is reviewing and updating its practical program to include swimming.
This move complies with the latest guidelines issued by the Education Bureau (EDB) and Centre for Health Protection (CHP), and KGV will continue to ensure strict adherence to those guidelines by staff and students alike. We feel it is important to notify the parental body before this change takes place, so that these units of work can be successfully integrated back into our curriculum.
In order to allay any concerns about restricted changing facilities, we have also increased the available changing space to provide four changing facilities for our swimming classes (2 x Boys and 2 x Girls). This procedure has been successfully trialed through our extra-curricular activities which have included swimming.
As outdoor temperatures rise significantly within this term, swimming offers an activity that is both physically challenging and refreshingly temperate. It is an essential life saving skill that we wish all our students to be confident swimmers.
Finally, as we look ahead with positivity to the new academic year, KGV will be hosting its annual Inter House Swimming Gala on 14th September at a new venue; Kowloon Park Swimming Pool. All of our students will get the chance to support their Houses and participate in swim heats.
Thank you very much for your support and if there are any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mr Riding (HOD Physical Education Department) through the following link, Charles.riding@kgv.edu.hk
Regards,
KGV Physical Education Department
Congratulations to our Year 12 student, Jamie Kim. Jamie achieved Highly Commended in The Unofficial Guide to Medicine Essay Competition. This is a prestigious international essay competition open to secondary school and medical students around the world. For Jamie to receive Highly Commended is both a great honour for Jamie personally and for our school. Well done, Jamie!
You can read her essay in the attachment.
Fabulous Franken's
Following a unit of learning on healthy eating and culinary traditions from across the world, our year 9 Chefs have been conjuring up monstrous desserts in the KGV Food Rooms! They’ve used the influence of Frankenstein to create mash-ups of two different sweet combinations. We offered the students a choice of base options: New York Cheesecake, Chocolate Lava Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookies or Mini Meringues. The challenge was to fuse their choice with another type of sugary treat. The results were so impressive! Some of the most innovative plating's included a 'Chocolate Berry Forest' 'Sweet Sensation'. 'Fluke', 'Mefinkie' and a 'Smores Delight'.
Well done to Sophie Cockram, Arham Shah, Cynthia Mu, Yashwin Malkani, Aryan Moorjani, David Choi and Samantha Leung who were voted as joint winners by their peers.
Big thanks to all our participants for demonstrating such high levels of creativity, design thinking and execution.
