Dear Parents
It has been great to see and hear our students back at school over the past two days. Starting the year and attending full days, has enabled a positive and energetic start to school life. Most students seemed happy to be back, and keen to see friends and teachers again.
The new Year 7 students have been particularly excited to be at school. Starting secondary school is a significant rite of passage, and something our students will remember for a long time. This age group is such a pleasure to teach, they come to school with such enthusiasm and naivety, that is so refreshing. We are looking forward to working with our students, as they grow and mature across the next few years.
Our teaching staff started on Monday this week, with three days of professional development. The main CPD sessions were based around:
Knowing our students well - knowing our students well and building a personal connection, we believe is the foundation for learning.
Inclusivity and equity - our school vision states that we strive to ‘create a ‘school for one’; a place where each student feels that the school was created just for them. Through a lived experience, we all feel a deep sense of belonging, identity, and purpose. Communication and teaching strategies that promote equity and inclusivity, is key to achieving our vision
Using data to inform teaching and learning - accessing and making sense of data on individual students is a key starting point for learning. Moving from data, to information, to knowledge and then action to impact student learning progress, is what we are focused on.
Bilingual and Multilingual Learners (BML) - we have growing numbers of students with a diverse linguistic profile, who happen to be learning through English as the medium of teaching. We shared strategies to enable all students with a variety of language skills, to access the curriculum.
Thank you to all parents who were able to complete the health and travel declarations via the ESF App. This enabled students to start school smoothly on their first day. We are on track to achieve the required staff vaccination rates and to maintain our current full day model. Next week, we will provide information regarding the EDB position on student vaccinations, with the plan to work closely with our parent community regarding this, and our next steps.
Thank you again for your ongoing support as we start our new academic year. We look ahead with optimism knowing that whatever unfolds in the year ahead, by working together as a community, we will continue to do all we can to support our students, and put them first in all that we do.
I hope you have a good weekend.

Principal, KGV School
We very much enjoyed welcoming our Year 13 students back today to begin their final year at KGV.
We are looking forward to supporting them as best we can in the weeks and months ahead.

Wishing you a great weekend,
Year 10 students have made a great start to the year and we have been working with them on organisation, note-taking and caring for themselves so they can be as successful this year as possible. They completed the Yellis test on Thursday and we will share this data with you when it is ready.
Thank you for your efforts in getting your children to school in proper uniform. Just a reminder that they will change before and after PE and Drama, so the only time students should wear PE or Drama kit to school is if they have it first period, and they will change into uniform afterwards.
If your child feels they need to change on of their selected option subjects then they should discuss that with you, and if necessary seek advice at school. We will take option change requests from Friday September 3rd.
It was great to welcome our Year 11 students back to school this morning. I have had many conversations with students about how determined they are to focus and work hard in the lead up to their exams this year.

The Year 8 students have done an outstanding job today as they start their second year at KGV. They have grown over the summer and look super confident as they return to school, no longer the ‘newbies’.
Below is a list of points to help you see what is coming up in the next couple of weeks. We will give more detail as each of these dates draws closer;
Uniform
The students looked amazing today! Please let us maintain this high standard. Visit the KGV website and go through the dress code to check you are meeting expectations e.g. students need belts with shorts/ trousers, black shoes need to be worn with full school uniform (not trainers).
PE/ Drama uniforms can be worn to school if students have PE/ Drama in Period 1.They can also return home in PE/ Drama kits if they have this lesson in Period 5. For PE/ Drama in other Periods, they should bring their kit to change into. We will continue to monitor this situation and adapt if necessary - we are looking into timetables and considering students who have PE and Drama in the same day.
Octopus Swipe In
Students need to swipe in each morning using their octopus. This is how we take our register and know if a student is on site. If you have not registered the octopus yet, please ask your child to go to the Year 7-9 office on Monday.

Wishing you a great weekend,
The Year 7 students have done an outstanding job over the last two days as they start their KGV Journey. Students got lost, went to the wrong lessons, wore incorrect uniform AND as a result, learnt a great deal, grew in confidence and developed a real sense of pride in themselves and what they can achieve! Let’s help them to continue to do this by trying not to worry too much about them and to try to do everything for them! They want to learn….let’s help them!

ESF Students Recognised for Sustainability Efforts with Prestigious CLP Award
Over the last two years, two of our KGV students have worked together on an ambitious plan to help shape sustainability for ESF, focusing on areas including solar energy, waste reduction, biodiversity and clean air advocacy. Despite the prolonged challenges posed by Covid-19, Zareen and Ernest (both Year 13), launched numerous projects across our schools as well as continuing with their studies.
Several of ESF’s existing sustainability teams were closely involved in the project and offered guidance and resources for our students.
“While regular teaching and learning in all of our schools had to adapt to changing circumstances, the scheduled work on sustainability by students and staff members also faced uncertain interruptions and logistical challenges,” said Kenneth Tam, ESF’s Health & Safety and Sustainability Manager.
“It is vital for students to be at the forefront of driving sustainability as they are the generations who will inherit the planet and its numerous environmental challenges,” said Stewart Redden, ESF’s Learning and Teaching Adviser.
The award ceremony was as inspirational as it was celebratory with our students speaking passionately and with great pride about their award-winning sustainability efforts.
Here’s what our environmental champions had to say about their transformational projects:
Zareen (Year 13) -
“We've also tried to encourage knowledge about plants and the environment by introducing a tutoring system. For Years Eight and Nine, we gave each tutor group a plant to take care of for the whole term and we supported them to increase their knowledge about plants, the environment and living things. And to add on to that, at KGV we reduced the amount of paper used for printing by 6% by using a paper clip system and we're continuing to track this.”
Our Remarkable Story
Congratulations to Sophia!
We're delighted to announce that after learning taekwondo since she was 3, Sophia successfully passed her first ever black belt exam!
