Dear Parents
We have enjoyed our first full week of school this week, and it is great to see all our students in class and learning for full days. As previously communicated, for our school to maintain full day schooling after the 30 September, then at least 70% of KGV staff will need to have two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for more than 14 days by 30 September. We are currently on track to achieve this. Additionally, if at least 70% of our students have taken the vaccine for more than 14 days, then there can be a relaxation of lunch and other arrangements at school.
By always following the EDB and CHP health guidelines, we are keen to move even closer to ‘normal operations’ over the months ahead, and we wish to work closely with our parent community to do this. Part of this process is to gather information on current student vaccination rates, and also intentions regarding vaccinations. This feedback and information will help inform our planning, and possible next steps.
Please take less than two minutes to fill in this Vaccination Survey on current and intended student vaccinations. Your feedback on this matter is much appreciated.
Please keep remembering to fill in the ESF Temperature App - Lionel VLE - Daily Temperature Record. This is part of the EDB expectation regarding school attendance. Everyday our students are also checked for temperature when they arrive at school via our two thermal temperature cameras.
Within the current Hong Kong stable COVID -19 environment, we are moving towards offering CAS activities soon, and planning for a Hong Kong based Challenge Week in early November this year. We are currently completing all the risk management processes to ensure that all activities can happen safely, and we comply with all CHP and EDB requirements. This means that some activities are not permitted, and others need to be modified. We also acknowledge that locally, the COVID-19 situation can change very quickly, and activities and events may need to be adjusted, postponed or even cancelled, with relatively short notice. Despite this, we are committed to the planning process, and to do what we can to provide the best chance of the CAS and Challenge Week learning opportunities to go ahead for our students.
A reminder that our canteens are open. Our service provider Sodexo has done a great job to get this service up and running again. Students can purchase hot meals at lunch break in the main canteen, the ‘bowl’, and at the ‘pizza shack’.
All parents are also welcome at our next ‘Friday Feedback’ session to be held on Friday 17 September, 10:30am, online. This is an opportunity to hear about what is happening in the school and to ask questions and provide feedback. To register, please sign up here.
Thank you again for your support. Please complete the Vaccination Survey , if you have not already done so.
I hope you enjoy the weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mark Blackshaw
Principal, KGV School

The Year 7 Team
Dear Parents,
The Year 8s have had an excellent week and are very quickly getting themselves familiarised with school life on the KGV campus. After a great deal of disruption to their Year 7 experience, it is great to see them learning to manage their time and organise themselves as they move from subject to subject across the campus. Students appear to be coping well with changing from PE and Drama kits into full school uniform after lessons. They are using their lockers effectively and learning to only carry essential items to and from lessons.Tutors will be continuing to monitor the situation and support students when and where necessary.
Big shout out to Naitik Keswani who over the summer holidays, joined an essay competition with the Indian Consulate in the 12-18 category,Naitik won second place and $3000 dollars. He was presented his award by the chief editor of South China Morning Post. Well done Naitik.
Hopefully you are aware that we have launched both our Challenge Week and CAS opportunities for this year. Students have access to all information through the student bulletin. Please take time to speak to your child about their thoughts on Challenge Week and CAS activities. Sign up for Challenge Week is 14th September for Year 8 students. For CAS activities, please make sure you speak to your child before you sign up for activities. We are all excited about the prospect of being involved in the CAS activities, so please be mindful of wasting the opportunity for another student. Please only sign up for activities you can commit to and which your child wants to participate in. Please speak to your child’s tutor if you have any questions.

SCMP Student of the Year Awards 2020/21
“Overcoming Obstacles, Celebrating Resilience”
Huge congratulations to Zareen who won an award at the 40th Student of the Year Awards (Organised by SCMP and HK Jockey Club). There were over 600 applications and 37 finalists across the different categories. She was one of the five Devotion to School winners. And by winning this award she got a $5000 scholarship as well!
Best Devotion to School is for individuals whose involvement and sense of service has won the respect and admiration of teachers and fellow students. Nominees are expected to combine the qualities of responsible leaders and good team players, while also being adept at planning, following through, leading peers through challenges, and promoting positivity in their community.
Well done!
Hong Kong Budding Poets(English) Award 2020/21
Poetry, one of the great arts and a renowned form of expression. When one thinks of poems, images of old Chinese poets and men with starchy wigs often come to mind; how have poets nowadays evolved from what existed back then? More importantly, how do the young poets of our generation go about writing poetry?
The Budding Poets competition in our very own HK answers these questions- a city-wide contest for students of all ages, involving both international and local schools. A participant has to pick from three categories to write from- ‘be grateful for’, ‘family’, and ‘because’ were the three keywords this year.
Kasper Wu of Y8 and Crystal Huang of Y9 achieved honorable mentions, stacking up
against people far superior to them in age; but as demonstrated, age doesn’t always win over ability. Both of them chose the word ‘be grateful for.’ We invited both of them to speak about their experiences in poetry, and their journey through this competition!
Kasper comes across as quite serious in his writing- he reveals the poem was about his mother, who took care of him and enrolled him in school despite facing difficulties. He felt that she had a big influence in his life, and decided to write about this subject because he felt a lot of familiarity. ‘I used similes and metaphors instead of vocabulary (words) to express my feelings, wanting people to know what I was saying without them.’ Kasper recounts, clearly a lover of indirect expression. Through his brother, he got interested in this competition, and took around 4-5 weeks to fully complete his piece; according to him, the hardest part was communicating his thoughts clearly. From past experiences, he’s quite immersed in both poetry and English and took this win as a learning opportunity.
Well done!
Indian Consulate - essay competition
Big shout out to Naitik (Year 8) who over the summer holidays, joined an essay competition with the Indian Consulate in the 12-18 category, Naitik won second place and $3000 dollars. He was presented his award by the chief editor of South China Morning Post. Well done Naitik.
Here is the brief of the essay provided by Naitik-
As you know, India has been through tough times recently but the problems started long before then. Our massive poverty numbers and the lack of health and sanitation has led to many deaths that lead to more emotional changes. The only way to lift India out of the situation is to make it fully independent so any money that is being spent stays in India. In the essay, we had to write about how to make India a "Independent India" Or Atma Nirbhar Bharat in Hindi. Prime Minister Modi created a scheme called Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav which moved India to be self-reliant for our 100th year of independence, which is 15th of August of 2047.
Well Done!
