Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to all parents and carers who were able to attend the Student Led Conferences with Tutors on Monday this week. I know our Tutors really appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and get to know ‘your child, our student’ a little better. We have been talking with our staff and students this year about how we can work even harder to make sure that all in our school community feel ‘known, heard, safe and successful’. Your engagement in events like the Student Led Conferences, is an important part of this process.
Due to recent clarification of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) requirements for large-scale events, we have decided to change the venue and organisation for the upcoming Swimming Gala. The event will be held at the KGV pool, across the day in smaller year-level groups. This will ensure all students who wish to take part can do so, with the safety of all as our priority. Our aim is to ensure our swimmers have a chance to compete and do their best, and to encourage healthy School House spirit and competition. Due to COVID restrictions and limitations on numbers for such an event, we are unable to invite parents and relatives to the gala. We are working on a system to post results and times live across the day, so parents can log in and keep updated.
Students in Year 8 to Year 12 will be signing up for Challenge Week activities over the next week or so. Challenge Week is an important part of the curriculum, culture and history of KGV. It is experiential learning where students are encouraged to grow by moving out of their comfort zones, making new friends, working with different staff and overcoming unique challenges. Please take some time to look through the Challenge Week website with your child to find activities that meet the goals of Challenge Week and the interests of your child.
Thank you to over 400 families who have filled in the vaccination survey. If you have not had a chance yet, it takes less than two minutes to complete the Vaccination Survey. We are using this information to work with ESF on future school operation options. From fourteen days after we get 70% of students vaccinated, then there can be a relaxation of lunch and other arrangements at school.
As a school we promote high uniform standards and strive to be fair to all students regarding the dress code. We believe that the KGV uniform promotes a sense of pride, engenders a sense of community, and identifies the students within the school. Also from a social justice perspective, having a school uniform affords all students the opportunity to present well, irrespective of background. Now that we have settled in for a week or so, we will be having further check-ins with students regarding our Student dress code. Our approach is to always work with our students first, have a conversation, and allow them the opportunity to get it right and align with our collective expectations.
Finally, it was great to have our ESF CEO, Ms Belinda Greer, in our school this Thursday. Ms Greer spent most of the time in our classrooms meeting our new Year 7 students. Many of our students have met Ms Greer before when she visited them at an ESF partner Primary school. On the classroom visits, we were struck by how positive and confident our students are. Many of them also told Ms Greer that so far, the best part about KGV was the Pizza and the School Field!
I hope you have a good weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mark Blackshaw
Principal, KGV School
It was great to see parents, tutors and students connecting through the online conferences last Monday. If you have not met with your child's tutor, please contact them to find a time.
We hope that this has started a relationship with the tutor and you feel comfortable contacting them so that together you can guide your child through their GCSE years.
Year 10 students will be signing up for Challenge Week activities next Thursday during tutor time. Please look through the CW website together to choose a first, second and third choice activity.
Option change requests can be submitted during the next week. If your child wants to request a change of option subject, please print and complete this form and ask them to bring it to Mr Ferriday in the Y10/11 office. We have pre-printed copies of this form in the office.
In tutor time soon, we will be helping students to understand how the grading and reporting systems work, so if you have any questions, your child should soon be an expert.

Our Year 12 Options Window opens this afternoon and we would like to remind students and parents to follow the instructions posted in today’s bulletin by our Vice Principal, Ms Murphy.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for taking the time to come into KGV School this week and kick-start our Home-School Partnership. It was wonderful to see so many of you here. I hope you found the resources useful which were sent out to you on cyber-safety and MYP. Feedback Friday is scheduled for 17 September and this online forum gives you access to Mr Blackshaw and the Year 7 team. See last week's bulletin for details. If you have any feedback for us on your child’s start to their KGV journey, please sign up to attend. Details can be found in this newsletter. We are also looking to hold an online Coffee Morning in early October, where we will focus on MYP curriculum and assessment, as I know there is a lot of information to take in and as the term progresses you may have more questions.
Please be aware that we are adapting our Swimming Gala plans to have an event onsite at KGV School. More information will be sent out to you over the coming week as we finalise our new plans to celebrate our KGV swimmers and run an Inter-House event!
As you will be aware, Challenge Week is an important time in our calendar. This year, from Monday 1 November to Friday 5 November, your child will be involved in Year 7 Challenge Week. This is a great opportunity for students to make new friends, learn more about themselves and learn new skills. The powerpoint here gives an overview of the range of activities the students will be involved with. Please can you complete the Google Form Here, to provide information on your child which will help with our planning. The cost for the Year 7 Challenge Week is HK$1500. Families will be invoiced shortly through e payment.
Year 7 school photographs will be taken on Monday 13 September! Please put this date in your diary and we will continue to remind students during tutor time.
Don't forget to sign up for your child’s CAS activities for this term. Please read the CAS section below from Dean Beard, our CAS Coordinator.
Hopefully the students are getting used to their laptops and organising themselves around school. We have less students coming into the office to report lost laptops, octopus cards, timetables etc! I am so proud of our Year 7s, they are doing an amazing job!
Next week is week 2!
Have a great weekend
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for supporting your child at this week’s Student-led Conferences. A strong home-school partnership is essential for your child’s success. Providing opportunities for students to see the school and parents working together is extremely powerful. Thank you too for the feedback you provide us through these sessions. This is important to us to continue to reflect on our best practice and to make KGV School even better for your child, our student.
Please can you mark Tuesday 14 September in your diaries as this is the day for most of our Year 8 & 9 students to have their school photographs taken. Students in R12M and U5-U12M will have these taken on Monday 27 September. Tutors will continue to remind students during tutor time.
Please be aware that we are adapting our Swimming Gala plans to have an event onsite at KGV School. More information will be sent out to you over the coming week as we finalise our new plans to celebrate our KGV swimmers and run an Inter-House event!
The school uniform is looking great at the moment. Thank you for helping us to maintain our high standards by checking students before they leave for school. We are noticing a few students coming into school wearing their shirts hanging out. Please can it always be tucked in, with students in shorts and trousers wearing a black belt. A reminder that Pride laces are to be taken out now and worn again to mark Pride week later in the year.
We are also seeing many more downball games and chess competitions happening, as students leave their mobile phones and earphones behind at 7:30 a.m. Please can you speak to your child about the importance of keeping their mobile phone in their bags from 7:30 a.m. and opting to socialise with others during breaks and lunch.
CAS signups will close today. Please see the CAS item below from Dean Beard, our CAS Coordinator.

Ghanjani had joined a art competition from the Indian Consulate to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence on 15 August. She came third in over 100 participants in the senior category (13-18) with being awarded $2000.
It was a art piece to represent the changes which have occurred in the past 75 years of India. From the achievements, to the people who help raise India to it’s famous buildings. All drawn in small illustrations and also filled with small patterns of zentangles.
