Dear Parents
We enjoyed another productive week of learning at KGV. The students seem really positive and happy, with the term 1 in full swing and with some exciting things happening.
We are looking very much to our remodelled Swimming Gala at our KGV pool, on Wednesday this week. The event will be held across the day in smaller year level groups. This will ensure every student who wants to can participate, with the safety of all as our priority. We look forward to igniting the famous KGV House spirit at the event, as Crozier, Nightingale, Rowell and Upsdell go head to head in some healthy competition.
We are also excited to be launching our Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme for another term. For the next 10 weeks or so, our students have signed up to over 100 different activities. From swimming training, to orchestra, to drama club, to peer maths tutorial, to academic support, to film club, to service learning, to a stock market game and knitting club! Just to name a few, the opportunities are amazing, and we thank our staff and students for leading these opportunities. We thank the CAS team of Dean Beard, Scarlet Ip and Eugenia Lui for leading and delivering such a diverse CAS programme.
Also this week and next, our students have been selecting their Challenge Week options. Again our organisers Tim Carrell and Ian Goff have put together a diverse program to hopefully cater for a range of students interests and passions. We are keen to get Challenge Week up and running again after a two year break, and are pleased with the range of local options. The Year 7 students are also looking forward to the Year 7 Challenge Week program, full of outdoor challenges and fun. Please keep in mind that the viability of the event may change at short notice, if we have any further COVID 19 developments.
As indicated in an App message earlier in the week, we have been collecting vaccination information from our students. At this point in time, we have approximately 75% of students aged 12 and above, who are either fully vaccinated, received one jab, or have made a booking for their first jab. We will be working with ESF and EDB to clarify what processes we need to follow to verify this, and what this could mean for getting our school even closer to normal operations.
I hope you have a great weekend.
Kind Regards
Mark Blackshaw
The assessment calendar for Year 10 will be emailed to students today. This will help them to plan their revision and manage their time. Planning and time management are areas where students seem to often need assistance and encouragement to be organised.
We are planning an online parent presentation for 6:00 p.m. Monday 20 September to discuss how courses and assessments are organised in Year 10 and 11, as well as grading systems and reporting. We are limiting participants to 100 to provide some ability to ask questions. Here is the Google meet link if you wish to add it to your calendar:
https://meet.google.com/rhy-itce-pcf
We think 100 places will be enough, but if you can't get in, we will record and make the recording available to all.
Yellis data was shared with families this week. Please read the letter that goes with that data to understand what it means.
If you have not yet met with your child's tutor, please get in touch with them to arrange an online meeting.

One to one meetings with tutors will begin next week. This is where the tutor will meet with your child to analyse their data, check on progress, discuss suitable goals and how we might support them in the run up to mocks and final exams this year.
If you have not yet met with your child's tutor, please get in touch with them to arrange an online meeting.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The Year 7 team spoke yesterday about the way in which we are beginning to see the personalities come out of our Year 7 students. We all have a pocketful of stories of our interactions with students this week and the way we are seeing them becoming more confident and even more enthusiastic and determined in their approach to learning. I wanted to give a special shout out to Siyul Lee (7R03) who stopped me in the corridor yesterday to ask if I would sign a petition about a topic he was passionate about. I was so impressed by his advocacy and maturity in taking action over a subject close to his heart. I look forward to seeing more of our Year 7s stepping up and ‘being their own remarkable.’
Few housekeeping matters from us this week,
CAS allocation period has ended, please read Mr Beard’s (CAS Coordinator) item in this newsletter for more details.

Just a friendly note to remind your child to look after their belongings as we have had several lost locker keys and octopus cards and misplaced sports bags/laptops.
Year 7 students have been meeting with the tutors ‘online’ this week, as we introduce them to Google Meet. We will continue to make sure students are trained in our online procedures, should we find ourselves in another period of online learning.
Have a great weekend.
Next week is Week 1.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Mr Tranter (Senior Head of Year 8 & 9) and I were super impressed with our Year 8 & 9 Student Council representatives. Student voice is very important to us at KGV School and it was lovely to hear them talk about their positive experiences at the start of this year. We have been struck by the level of maturity and insight these students have when discussing how they can work with staff to make KGV an even better school. We look forward to working with this group of students across the year.

We would like to remind all students and parents that the Year 12 Option Window closes today.
Our Timetabling team are doing their very best to facilitate requests. If your request cannot be facilitated, this is because either the proposed class is full or there is a clash on your timetable which does not permit the change to take place.
A reminder also that our Year 12 students can sign up for Challenge Week until next Thursday 16 September.
Wishing you a great weekend.
A reminder that all Year 13 IB students will be in school next Monday 13 September until 3.30pm. This will give our students much needed time to meet with their EE supervisor and receive feedback on their draft.

Buddy Reading Programme
The Buddy Reading Programme enabled us to communicate with younger students and teach them in a fun and creative manner. Seeing their progress gave us a sense of pride as we worked as a team to provide them with a valuable experience. Additionally, we were in awe of their perseverance and commitment to learning. Overall, this opportunity allowed us to appreciate the joviality of teaching as seeing them in joy whilst they engaged in the activities was the most rewarding aspect.

Seaing Change is dedicated to promoting advocacy for environmental issues, specifically involving disposable packaging and the effects they have on marine life. Tetra Pak recycling is one of many events we have hosted since last year. Please bring in any liquid cartons and place them in the recycling bins per your house colour. Please also be mindful that these bins are only for recycling uses."

Scholastic Chess Tournament
A massive congratulations to Scott (Y10), Anjaneya (Y11) and Adam (Y11) who competed in June, July, and August Scholastic Chess Tournament and achieved the championship for their division against students.
The scholastic chess tournaments are a whole day event with 5 rounds. I have participated in scholastic chess tournaments before and have won multiple division B trophies, but this is the first time I have won division A which is the top division of the tournament. I had to play against strong chess players of similar skill from schools all across Hong Kong and winning this trophy means a lot to me and it's a remarkable achievement because ever since I first joined the scholastic chess tournaments, I made it my goal to one day win the top division.
- Scott
The scholastic chess tournament was a fun and rewarding experience where I got to play and meet other chess players. I’ll definitely go again next year!
-Adam
Well done to everyone involved!
A group of our Year 10 Media students were recently picked to submit questions to be sent out to Fala Chen, star of the Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which was recently released. As a prize, they got to attend the Hong Kong opening of the film.
