Dear Parents
As you may be aware, the CHP has advised that persons aged 12 to 17 years, now receive only one dose of the Comirnaty vaccine. In light of this, the EDB has indicated that there can be further moves towards more normal lunchtime arrangements when:
More than 70% of staff directly employed by the school have taken two doses (we are currently at over 95%)
More than 70% of the total number of students in the school, or in a particular year level, have been vaccinated for 14 days or more
From the previous data that we have collected, it seems that it is very likely that we will achieve the 70% vaccination level first in years 10 to 13, with the year 8 and 9 data just a couple of percent lower. This may mean that in the first instance, years 10-13 levels will be able to access more flexible lunchtime arrangements. Designated eating areas will remain in place for year levels, until each level reaches the 70% of students for one dose for more than 14 days vaccination threshold.
We will continue to comply completely with EDB and CHP safety requirements through this process. To move forward, we will be requesting that students verify their vaccination records. The process requires the uploading of a photo (taken on a mobile phone) of your child's vaccination record. The photo will need to show the student name and vaccination date. We are working to finalise the KGV Google Form that will be sent out separately early next week.
Secondly, as a school, I am always impressed with the general behaviour of students in our school and community. However, we do on occasions, need to work with students and families in instances when our young people step outside the expected behaviour standards. In this regard, I would also like to remind parents of the new ESF Substance Misuse Policy, which was released a few months ago. It is important that parents are aware of the implications of this policy, and the approach across ESF schools to the handling of substance misuse matters involving students. A copy of the Community Friendly Policy Explanation can be found here. Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this policy.
Have a good weekend.
Kind Regards
Mark Blackshaw
It was good that so many parents could join us last Monday for the curriculum presentation. The presentation explained exam boards, grading, reporting and assessment processes. A recording of the presentation is available here. During the presentation we mentioned the full list of Syllabus statements and the assessment calendar.
School photos will take place for most students next week.
This year we have tweaked our 3 core school values. They are Honesty, Courage and Empathy. Please take a moment to talk to your child about what these mean to them.
Student Grant Forms: The school is waiting for the pre-printed Student Grant forms 2021/22 (Form B) from the Education Bureau, EDB. The preprinted forms will have the information the EDB needs to deposit the grant to your account. We would appreciate your patience as we work through the process of getting the bespoke forms to you. A notice will be sent to both parents and students once we have the forms available.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you to those parents who have signed up to attend Monday’s Information Session. We have a handful of places left should anyone still want to attend. Please refer to my earlier message regarding sign up details. We will record this session and make it available to you all on Tuesday, allowing you all to have access to the information on our baseline tests and how we use them to support students.
Thank you also for completing the Challenge Week forms. A reminder to do this asap if you haven’t. We will host a Challenge Week information session for parents after the half term break. Students will also receive more information during tutor time.
I met with the Year 7 tutors this week to discuss how all our students are settling into KGV. We shared lots of positive stories about individual students. We have also identified a few areas which many students would benefit from additional support. A couple of these are organisation and handwriting. Please can you support your child at home in the packing of bags and the completion of homework. From 20th September onwards Year 7 students have been receiving homework. Please let your child’s tutor know if you have any questions or concerns regarding homework.
Have a lovely weekend

Dear Parents and Caregivers
This week Mr Tranter and Mr Davidson have started speaking to all Year 8 students through a number of assemblies, as they promote expectations for the year as well as introduce the students to their House Captains. House spirit is an extremely important part of KGV and we are hoping to run as many activities as possible to enable students to support their KGV House.
Next week we have more school photographs being taken. N5-7, R12 and U5-U12 tutor groups have their school photographs scheduled for Monday 27th September. We will send a message to students reminding them of their time slot with the photographer.
Have a good weekend.

UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge and Junior Mathematical Olympiad 2021
Kasper (Year 8) received a Gold Prize in the UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge out of over 300,000 participants in April 2021. Being one of the top 1200 highest performer, Kasper was invited to participate in the next round – The Junior Mathematical Olympiad 2021. Again, Kasper is awarded a Certificate of Merit.
Kasper has some words to share:
“Thank you Ms Vaze and Ms Mccreadie for organizing the events. When I prepared for the challenges, I learned to write full solutions systematically and think out of the box to solve the mathematical problems. I love the way to learn new things and to improve the reliability of my performance in challenging settings too. Thank you for giving me these valuable learning opportunities!”
About the event: The UKMT organizes national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils. Over 300,000 students from around the UK and the world entered the UKMT Junior Math Challenge with the top 6% receiving a gold award. UKMT invites top 1200 of the very highest performers to join the follow-on round - Junior Mathematical Olympiad. (UKMT link: https://www.ukmt.org.uk/jmc and https://www.ukmt.org.uk/jmo )
