Challenge Week Update
There was considerable excitement and anticipation this week in the lead up to Challenge Week. There is a wide range of locally based events to be enjoyed across the week. From Robot Challenge, Action for a Cause, The Great Race, Wakeboarding, Outdoor Adventures, App Development, Pottery and Hong Kong Art (just to name just a few), it is great to see the variety of events our students are involved in. I know the Year 7 students are particularly excited about their program, with five exciting days of outdoor activities and team work.
Challenge focuses on experiential learning designed to challenge capabilities, attitudes, thinking, identity and relationships with others. If you get a moment over the week ahead, please consider looking for an opportunity to have a conversation with your child about what they can get out of the week, and encourage them to reflect on their experiences and behaviours. Some discussion points for student reflection may be:
· Be in the moment. This is an amazing learning opportunity. Many of the activities will be a challenging and unique experience. Please encourage students to take time to stop every now and then and take it in, and think about where they are and what a unique experience they are having.
· Be grateful. Grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and to have the support of parents, teachers and the school. In addition, to be grateful for their own circumstances, especially when they see other people who may not have the same opportunities.
· Be safe. Have a great time and be adventurous, but safety and that of the group is the number one priority.
· Be a team. The challenge experience is about the people with you in the moment. We encourage our students to embrace the friendship opportunity and to strengthen bonds and create new connections.
· Be a contributor. The amount of effort you put into something is usually strongly related to what you get out. We urged our students to be positive, encouraging, proactive and supportive of each other and of the KGV staff travelling with you.
· Be excited. Have some fun. Laugh with friends and most importantly, laugh at yourself.
· Be a learner. We encouraged students to try and make sense of what they are experiencing. What did they learn and what makes them rethink their attitudes and perceptions?
I would like to thank the parents for their support regarding Challenge Week. Thank you also to all our staff who have led the organisation for their trips and are taking the responsibility to ensure our students have a wonderful and safe experience. I would also like to acknowledge the work of our wonderful administration staff for their organisational contribution. I would like to thank our Vice Principal Mr Carrell and Mr Ian Goff who are our Challenge Week Coordinators, for their leadership and organisation of this significant event.
A few practical reminders:
Please make sure you know exactly where your child needs to be on Monday morning and what clothing and equipment they need. All information for their activity is available on the Challenge Week website. Each page includes email links to the staff running the activity in case you need to contact them. Please bookmark the site or note that it is linked from our main school website kgv.edu.hk.
School buses will run as normal all week, and on Monday will leave school at 3:30pm as there is no early finish for Challenge Week.
All other regular CAS activities and sports coaching are cancelled for the week
For activities based in school, the canteen will be open but providing a limited service since most staff and students are offsite.
If your child will be absent any day, please contact the trip leader directly.
In a slight emergency, please call our school reception for assistance 27113029. In an urgent emergency, call the Challenge Week emergency phone 92090479 (prefix with +852 for whatsapp) to connect directly with our Challenge Week coordinator Tim Carrell.

Well done to everyone who completed the course! Busy day on Thursday with Y7, Y9, Y8 & Y13 all running!
Year 7 - Abhijay and Brandon have both appeared in the kungfu black belt exam at the Wan Chai headquarters of Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon Association and passed gracefully, breaking all the wooden boards!
It was a sustained effort of 5 years for Abhijay since he started his kungfu learning journey in 2017. It got a bit late due to covid pandemic but eventually he reached the milestone.
Well done!
Yannis's parents (professional musicians) have done huge amounts to promote music, and provide opportunities for children with learning needs. Their story is in Hong Kong local newspapers! You can visit the story here and here.
Yannis's parents also led an amazing orchestral concert last summer, more information can be found on https://www.pmf.org.hk/truecolorssymphony
