Dear Parents
Firstly, I would like to wish all our community Happy Diwali! I know there have been many celebrations across the week, with our school celebration planned for Tuesday next week. It is always a highlight celebration in our school calendar, and we are looking forward to the music and performances next week.
It has been an exciting and rewarding Challenge Week for our students and staff. I have been able to visit a number of activities, and two things have stood out for me: the variety of activities on offer, and the high levels of student engagement and activity. The idea of experiential learning is underpinned by the notion that we ‘learn by doing’. I witnessed plenty of doing, and I am sure for many students, this week was a great learning experience. The week aligns strongly in supporting our school vision to create a “school for one; a place where each student feels that the school was created just for them. Through a lived experience, we all feel a deep sense of belonging, identity, and purpose”. We hope next year we may be able to return to international experiences during Challenge Week. We want to sincerely thank our parents and carers for their support of Challenge Week. It is a unique part of KGV, and adds to the richness of the student learning experience.
A reminder that due the fact that years 9 to 13 students have all reached the 70% vaccination threshold, students in this group will be able to access more flexible lunch arrangements at school. Students in year 7 and 8 will still need to eat in designated areas. We will also be reverting to one lunch break next week. We have communicated this with students, and they have been given the updated lesson timings as below.
Finally, due to Challenge Week and Diwali, we assume that there may be a few tired students this evening, that may need a Saturday morning sleep in!
Enjoy the weekend.
Kind Regards
Mark Blackshaw
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are really looking forward to hearing Challenge Week tales from our Year 8 students. We hope they have had a great week, making new friends, challenging themselves and making memories.
Next week is our uniform transition week, as we move from summer to winter. The main difference is the wearing of the tie for winter uniform. Students have the option next week as to whether they wear the tie, but starting Monday 15th November, school ties will be an essential part of the uniform. Students also have the option of wearing the school jumpers, fleeces and windbreakers.
We will return to one lunch time slot in our daily schedule starting from Monday. Whilst students in Year 9-13 may eat in any of the school facilities, Year 7 and 8 students will need to eat in different areas (until we reach the threshold of 70% vaccination rates in these year groups). Students in Year 7 and 8 will continue to eat their snack in tutor time and use the hall, GLT and piazza areas for lunch. Staff will continue to closely monitor these areas.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 8 Team

It has been a great week and our students have thrown themselves into the activities of Challenge Week. See the CW blog for images and highlights of the week.
Next week we will help Year 11 students to complete their initial option choices and spend time thinking about inclusivity, wellbeing and equity for all. Year 10 1:1 conversations and preparing Year 11 students for their term 2 mock exams will be our main foci for the rest of this term.
The Year 11 learning review is scheduled for December 7th and this will be a chance to review option choices and check on progress.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a week! The Year 7 students have been quite simply ‘remarkable’! They have challenged themselves, shown amazing levels of enthusiasm and ‘can-do’ spirit and been exceptional ambassadors for KGV School! We have put together this short video to show some highlights of the week. Please click here to view. There were a lot of tired students leaving KGV today. Please talk to them about their Challenge Week experiences and reiterate how proud we are of them.

Character Strengths Parenting
Monday 15 November 2021
6:30-8pm
Online
Join us for our upcoming online session on ‘Character Strengths Parenting’.
Knowing our top 5 or signature character strengths and using them in daily life can not only help us in achieving our goals in life but also help us to become happier, engaged and productive individuals. Character Strengths are positive parts of our personality that impact how we think, feel and behave. These positive character traits are what we are naturally good at.
When character strengths are applied in parenting, both parents and their teenage children thrive and report higher well-being scores, fulfilment, better performance and more resilience. Taking a strengths-based parenting approach, parents are able to easily communicate with their kids and vice-versa. Also this approach increases engagement leading to mutual understanding. It also reduces stress and adversity, impacts academic performance and it is easier to empower & guide teenagers when we understand their strengths.
This Strengths-based parenting workshop will be delivered by Mahesh Pamnani, Chief Happiness Officer at Inspire2Aspire Consulting. He has 12 years of experience designing and delivering happiness, wellbeing and positive education workshops in Hong Kong.
