Dear Parents
We had a really positive week back at school after the excitement of Challenge Week. It was great to hear the stories of adventure, camaraderie, and learning through a range of Challenge Week stories. From a student account of ‘writing their best creative novel ever’, to going on ‘a paddle board marathon’, to ‘creating the world’s best underwater robot’, to ‘I did not know how hard it was to learn to ride a bike’, just some of the great stories that I have heard across this week, as students reflected upon their experiences. Thank you again for your support of the Challenge Week Programme.
Next week our KGV community is celebrating KGV Pride Week. A variety of student-led events will occur throughout the week, as we recognise this important sector of our community. This supports directly our Inclusivity and Equity agenda, and the KGV School vision that states ‘through a lived experience, we all feel a deep sense of belonging, identity, and purpose’
In the months ahead, there is a chance that we will begin to participate in a greater range of Inter-School Sporting competitions through the HKSSF. We will be following the guidelines of the Education Bureau (EDB) which stipulate that to participate in inter-school sports competitions / events, individual students aged 12 to 17 years must have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine for more than 14 days, and individual students aged 18 years or above must have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine for more than 14 days.
Finally, we are looking forward to the upcoming school production of the ‘Addams Family’ musical comedy, to be staged in our school hall on 24, 25 and 26 November. Unfortunately due to COVID 19 restrictions, our limited tickets have already sold out to the family of cast and crew members. Thank you to Head of Drama Ian Baker, and Head of Music Alex Carlile and all other staff involved, for providing this incredible learning opportunity. We can’t wait for the show!
Have a good weekend.

Dear Parents and Caregivers
Year 7 students this week have been extremely busy this week both inside and outside the classroom. Students had an extremely engaging session with the author, David Greenberg who spoke about his passion for poems. They have been engaged in conversations regarding our newly updated values and some of them have been auditioning for our upcoming Evening of Music and Dance! A very busy week indeed.

Character Strengths Parenting
Monday 15 November 2021
6:30-8pm
Online
Join us for our upcoming online session on ‘Character Strengths Parenting’.
Knowing our top 5 or signature character strengths and using them in daily life can not only help us in achieving our goals in life but also help us to become happier, engaged and productive individuals. Character Strengths are positive parts of our personality that impact how we think, feel and behave. These positive character traits are what we are naturally good at.
When character strengths are applied in parenting, both parents and their teenage children thrive and report higher well-being scores, fulfillment, better performance and more resilience. Taking a strengths-based parenting approach, parents are able to easily communicate with their kids and vice-versa. Also this approach increases engagement leading to mutual understanding. It also reduces stress and adversity, impacts academic performance and it is easier to empower & guide teenagers when we understand their strengths.
This Strengths-based parenting workshop will be delivered by Mahesh Pamnani, Chief Happiness Officer at Inspire2Aspire Consulting. He has 12 years of experience designing and delivering happiness, wellbeing and positive education workshops in Hong Kong.

Our Remarkable Stories
We are excited to announce that Ran Zhao, a Year 12 student from King George V School, was recently selected as a Foyle Young Poet of the Year. The Foyle Young Poets Award is the largest poetry competition for secondary students in the world. Every year, 15 winning poets are selected from over 14,000 entries internationally, and have their poems anthologised by the UK’s Poetry Society. The winning poets are invited to a two week writing course in the UK, where they will work alongside two established poets, with the aim of improving their craft.
Ran joined the competition with some friends and when commenting about her award winning poem, she stated that “I didn’t have any goals with this poem, I just liked frogs and wanted to let out some steam! I’m really honoured the poem was able to resonate with so many people. I really love poetry because you can do whatever you want with it, and I think it’s so important as an outlet of emotion, a way to come to terms with your emotions, by laying them out and examining them. I was also attracted to the competition because of the support and resources it provides the winning candidates, and since I was lucky enough to be recognized, I’m really excited to be able to use the opportunity to improve my writing.”
Read the poem below:
GET UP, WE’RE GOING HOME
who told you to go crouch at the edge of the storm
drain the whole night, feed handfuls of yourself
to the rainwater? you’ve got a cold now, and your
clothes are drenched from last night’s storm, and
i have to climb down there and crawl in the mud
after the bullfrogs, reach into each of their pale
glowing moon-bellies and draw out the little giblets
of your heart. come on, let me dry you off. let me
walk you home in this red rain jacket i brought
when i went looking for you at dawn. next time
you’re on your own, okay? you know the rain
is just water. it has no secrets to give.
Two KGV students took part in the HK Age Group swimming competition and produced some amazing individual and relay results.
Poppy and Eunis both in Year 8, competed in the HK Age Group Long Course Championships on 6th and 7th November at Kowloon Park Swimming Pool. Eunis won 4 golds and 2 silver and Poppy won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Well done and congratulations to both girls.
