Dear Parents and Carers
We had a good week at school with many of us enjoying the cooler weather. We have a busy last two weeks of term to finish Term 1 at KGV school. Excitingly, we are looking forward to the Sports Carnivals on Wednesday 8th and Friday 10th next week. Seeing the House spirit alive and well again is wonderful to see. We know our students are going to enjoy this famous KGV tradition.
We are also very excited to bring back the KGV Alliance on Thursday, 16 December 2021. This will be our first gathering since 2019, and an opportunity to hear our students pitch their entrepreneurial ideas to make our community and world a better place. Register today and secure your pass to join us for a new opportunity to learn, connect and collaborate with our students and experts.
The mission for the KGV Alliance is to build:
“A community partnership, powered by student ideas to create positive change”
What to expect:
A presentation by Max Von Kleist, an entrepreneur and business owner sharing a story of risk, challenge and reward in COVID 19 times
A student environmental group “Seaing Change”, will share the success story of different initiatives and pitch for support with future projects.
Arthur Cheung, a Year 13 student who attended the inaugural UNITAR Youth Ambassador Asia Pacific Program.
MEEOPP, an established EDTech company and foundation Alliance partner, will showcase what can come from sustaining partnerships.
THe event is free, and to get your Alliance Pass, please click on this link https://www.eventbrite.hk/e/kgv-alliance-7-tickets-215456043827
Have a great weekend.
Kind Regards,

Reports and grades
You should be receiving a number of assessment grades over these few weeks as students complete units of study and teachers grade their work.
You will receive a message in the app titled "Reports" with a link to the CCF system. In there, any section that is green has completed assessment data. You will see the Assessment Grade for that specific assessment.
At the top of the CCF page is the Overview. This shows the Current Attainment Grade (CAG) for your child's subjects. This is different from the Assessment Grade because it takes into account all evidence seen by the teacher up to this point in the course, including the assessment grades. The CAG is our best judgement of how they are going in this subject up to this point.
At the very top of the CCF page is a link to the "CCF Overview", a help file with more information.
At the end of the term, you will receive a summary of all the assessment and Current attainment grades in a pdf.
Sports days
Next Wednesday is Sports day for Y7-9 students, but the whole school will show support by wearing their PE kit and house colours for the day. The Y10 Sports day will be on Friday at Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground.
Learning Review Monday 13 Dec
The Year 11 Learning Review is scheduled for 13 Dec from 2:30pm to 6:30pm.
Meetings will be 10 minute slots, online through Google Meet. The links for each meeting will be shown once you have successfully booked a meeting slot.
The system will open for bookings today (Friday 3 Dec) at 6pm. The system will close on Sunday 12 Dec at 6pm to allow teachers time to prepare for these meetings the next day. We highly recommend that your child joins you for these meetings.
Please make your bookings. In the App, tap the "Lionel 2 VLE" button and scroll down to the appointments icon.
If you don't see a teacher listed for a particular timeslot, it is because they are already booked for that time.
It is not possible for every parent to see every teacher on this one evening. So, while this is the only formal opportunity we set aside where all Year 11 teachers are available, please know that teachers will discuss issues or answer questions about your child at any time via email or phone. Email links for all teachers are available in the App.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week we spoke to our Year 7 students about uniform and behaviour expectations. We offered strategies on organising themselves and their belongings.
To support those students who have PE and Drama on Monday Week 2, we are permitting students to remain in PE or Drama kits for the lesson which is scheduled between the two practical subjects. If your child has PE and Drama on a Monday Week 2, please can you talk to them about this new arrangement. This will start on Monday 13th December. We will monitor this situation and review early next year.
Next week our Sports Days will take place on Wednesday 8th December and Friday 10th December. As communicated last week, all students in Year 7 will take part in Sports Day on Wednesday 8th December. Students should wear PE kits to school for the full day. They will eat lunch during their Period 4 lesson and then participate in Sports Day on the KGV field during the KGV lunch period and Period 5. Friday 10th December is the Sports Day for students in Year 10-13. Students in Year 7 will attend their lessons as normal on this day.
It’s been great to see so many students engaged in CAS activities term 1. The last two weeks of term will allow students to plan and sign up for their term 2 CAS activities. See Mr Beard's newsletter post for more details.
Have a great weekend.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week we have spoken to Year 8 students about the games they are playing on the field. As the weather is gorgeous, the field is full of students trying to make the most of their breaks and lunches. Please talk to your child about the games they are playing and the need to be respectful of others and mindful of actions in a restricted environment. We will be hosting an assembly next week to talk through our expectations.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you to those parents who were able to make appointments for this week’s Learning Review. It was lovely to listen to our teachers reflecting on the excellent conversations they had during the evening and how well our Year 9 students are doing in their subject areas.
This week we also spoke to our Year 9 students about uniform and behaviour expectations. We offered strategies on organising themselves and their belongings. We are a busy school and we need our Year 9 students to be mindful of their actions and to take responsibility for their behaviours.

Next week our amazing Addams Family cast will be showcasing their talents again, as they present some highlights from the show at lunchtime on Wednesday 8th December. We look forward to seeing all our Year 9 superstars in action, including Savanna Ng who we unfortunately did not give a shout out to last week! Apologies Savanna!

Y13 Higher Education applications. Our team of H.E. Counsellors are busy finalising documents in support of our Y13s’ applications. Students are reminded that they should log in their applications on Unifrog, to ensure that all necessary documents are sent in time for the right applications. Students are responsible for forwarding university correspondence on document requests or outstanding items to their HE Counsellor.
Students applying for HKU, CUHK and/or HKUST have been reminded to log in to relevant application portals to check that there is no outstanding item for their application. They should inform their relevant HE Counsellor immediately if they notice any missing supporting documents.

Dear Parents & Students,
It’s been an incredibly busy and fun packed term 1 for CAS Activities which makes for a welcome change after the past year. Under our activities term blocking format, most Term 1 activities end Friday 3 December. A few sports, performing arts and a select few other activities will continue, due to the pressures of their season, performance dates and external factors.
I would like to remind you of the procedure for activity sign up to create a fair and equitable sign up process during the transition between term 1 and term 2.
Important Dates:
Please remember: Registration is NOT on a first-come-first-served basis. All students registered will be placed on the waiting list until the end of the registration period. If the number of enrolment exceeds the maximum number of participants, names will be drawn randomly by Lionel to only allocate those that have been pre-approved by parents to join the activity.
For external paid activities:
Paid activities joined at the beginning of the year have a full year commitment, and students will not be eligible for a refund if they decide to leave the program.
For new term 2 paid activities, please check the following link for details: https://www.kgvcasactivities.com/external-providers-programs
While we are looking to continue to run as close as possible to a normal CAS Activities program, we are also looking ahead and requesting your understanding of the possibility that changes and adaptation may still be necessary because of the current situation. We will have to abide by the rules and guided directives from EDB and ESF, which may involve changes such as rescheduling, cancellation, a shortened program and so on at short notice. We will do our best to communicate any changes as clearly and as soon as possible through the KGV bulletin, ESF App, website or email.
The KGV CAS Activities website is especially designed and dedicated to all things relating to the activities program (https://www.kgvcasactivities.com/). Browse through the site, have a look at the brochures specifically designed for each year group, and then follow the instructions on how to sign up!
For more information about signing up, withdrawal, allocation and parental approval click here.
Finally, I would like to thank parents for your support with allowing students to take part in the CAS program. I would also welcome any feedback or suggestions you have to both improve the CAS Program by identifying particular activities that you would like to see offered at KGV.

Youth Alcohol Consumption and Communication
(By Kely support group)
The issue of mental health has been an ongoing discussion in light of the current environment in Hong Kong. Several research have concluded that youth have increased their uptake in alcohol during these difficult times. As alcohol becomes a way to distance from stressors or challenges an individual may be facing, continued avoidance of life's challenges and lack of healthy coping mechanisms can be direct facilitators of problematic drinking down the road. With this, the role of parents and teachers as role models becomes even more critical in the lives of the youth. With the ever-changing society and increasing access to alcohol and other risky behaviours, it is essential that parents and teachers engage their children and students in conversations that give guidance and empathise on situations where they may face peer pressure.

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge
Our students recently took part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge.
The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice Challenge.
It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.
The problems on the Senior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.
All 20 students did exceptionally well. David (Year 12) did particularly well as he achieved a perfect score!
