Dear Parents and Carers,
What a great week of learning and fun at KGV. It felt like the KGV of old this week, with so much happening in and around campus. One highlight was the Year 7-9 Sports Day on Wednesday and 10-13 Sports Day on Friday. It was great to see participation on all levels and terrific House spirit. We have some very talented athletes, and it was important to provide them with an opportunity to compete and display their prowess. Also on Wednesday, the students from the Addams Family Musical performed the musical numbers in the Quadrangle to rapturous applause. It was a great opportunity for the rest of the school to see our talented singers and musicians.
We also had the Year 10 students operating their Mini Enterprise stalls under the theme of Christmas Bizarre. The activity provides a real-life opportunity for students to run an enterprise, and deal with rents, costs, revenue and profit/loss outcomes. A real-world learning opportunity indeed.
A couple of reminders:
Friday 17 December is the last day of term with a half day finish at 12.15pm. School buses will run at this earlier time.
We have a shortened end of Term 1 holiday period of two weeks. All students return on Monday 3 January, which will be a Week 2 on the student timetables.
We are still seeking to improve our vaccination numbers to enable more relaxed lunchtime arrangements. If your child has been vaccinated at least once, please take a picture of the certificate and upload it here Vaccination Record for KGV. If you have trouble doing this, then please just email the picture directly to Betty Ko (betty.ko@kgv.edu.hk)
A special congratulations to Year 9 student Ariel Suen 09N10 who won the ESF Christmas Card Competition. We were fortunate to welcome our ESF CEO, Belinda Greer to the school, to especially congratulate Ariel. The card pictured below will be used across the Foundation to spread the Christmas cheer. Congratulations Ariel!
Have a great weekend.

There is one week left in term 1. Year 11 students had a skills day this week where we focussed on the skills they need to be organised, revise effectively and perform well in exams.
Summary reports showing assessment grades and Current Attainment Grades (CAG) will be sent out at the end of next week. These will show how your child is performing in all of their subjects.
Mock exams are scheduled for 17 January and students can access the exam timetable here.
The Year 11 Learning Review is scheduled for 13 Dec from 2:30pm to 6:30pm.
Meetings will be 10 minute slots, online through Google Meet. The links for each meeting will be shown once you have successfully booked a meeting slot.
The system will open for bookings today (Friday 3 Dec) at 6pm. The system will close on Sunday 12 Dec at 6pm to allow teachers time to prepare for these meetings the next day. We highly recommend that your child joins you for these meetings.
Please make your bookings. In the App, tap the "Lionel 2 VLE" button and scroll down to the appointments icon.
If you don't see a teacher listed for a particular timeslot, it is because they are already booked for that time.
It is not possible for every parent to see every teacher on this one evening. So, while this is the only formal opportunity we set aside where all Year 11 teachers are available, please know that teachers will discuss issues or answer questions about your child at any time via email or phone. Email links for all teachers are available in the App.
We had a great day of Sports today and I was so proud of the way students participated and competed.
There is one week left in term 1. Year 10 students are having 1:1 conversations with their tutors and should be receiving their first sets of grades for each subject. In the first week back after the break we are planning a skills day for all Year 10 students where we will focus on the skills they need to be organised, revise effectively, perform well in exams and manage any anxiety.
Summary reports showing assessment grades and Current Attainment Grades (CAG) will be sent out at the end of next week. These will show how your child is performing in all of their subjects.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What an amazing week we have had! Year 7s finally got the chance to see what KGV School is really like! From Year 7-9 Sports Day on Wednesday, to Addams Family performing again in the Quads. From Year 10s selling their ware in the Mini Enterprise Christmas Bizarre to our themed ‘ be your own remarkable’ dress day yesterday! Year 7 students, you have blown me away this week with your creativity, passion, athleticism and pride for your House and School!
It was extremely difficult to decide on a special shout out this week as we had so many talented athletes and a wide range of ‘remarkable’ outfits today. We decided in the end to give a shout out to Siyul Lee in R03, who reached out to KGV students to help him continue to research and write his field guide about Hong Kong Birds! Siyul really does show an incredible passion for ornithology.
Next week is our final week of Term 1. As we approach the New Year, we are aware that many of our Year 7 students will have their twelfth birthday and you may be considering having your child vaccinated. As we continue to look to take advantage of more social opportunities around KGV school, as more of us are vaccinated, please can you update us as soon as your child has their first vaccination. The form is very simple and requires you to update a photograph of the vaccination certificate.
School will finish at 12.15pm on Friday 17 December and we will start again on Monday 3 January, which will be a Week 2. Please make a note of this.
Have a great weekend.

From Year 10s selling their ware in the Mini Enterprise Christmas Bizarre to our themed ‘ be your own remarkable’ dress day yesterday! Year 8 students, you have blown me away this week with your creativity, passion, athleticism and pride for your House and School!
This week Mr Davidson, Head of Year 8, Mr Tranter and Mr Blackshaw spoke to the Year 8 students to congratulate them on their work this term, as well as reminding them of the standards we believe all students should meet in terms of uniform and behaviour. We are very proud of our Year 8 students and their presence around the school. We would like them to become more involved in activities at lunch and break times, but this is only possible if more parents submit the necessary evidence for the vaccination records. If you have had your child vaccinated and are yet to complete the form, please can I ask you to do so asap. The form is below and will take only a few minutes to complete.
School will finish at 12.15pm on Friday 17th and we will start again on Monday 3rd January, which will be a Week 2. Please make a note of this.

Our Year 9 students today had their first real taste of the Community Project. On Friday we hosted Social Career, Hong Kong’s online service matching platform, and 9 of their partner NGOs for workshops designed to connect and inspire them in preparation for their Community Project next term.
During the day, students took part in two NGO-led workshops on topics addressing issues such as mental health, inequality, refugees and environment. Each NGO presented the problem they are addressing and provided students with an insight on their progress on the issue and their programs, as well as advice on how young people can make a difference and get involved in their community. During the other half of the day, students engaged in a skills workshop with Mr Turner, discussing the skills they will need to be successful in the project next term.
Next week is our final week of Term 1. As we approach the end of term we wanted to remind parents who still need to submit the vaccination record for their child. Thank you to those parents who have done so already. If your child has recently been vaccinated and you have not yet completed the vaccination, please can I ask that you do so asap. The form is below for your easy reference.
School will finish at 12.15pm on Friday 17 December and we will start again on Monday 3 January, which will be a Week 2. Please make a note of this.
Have a great weekend.

Session 2 - Wed 19 Jan 2022
As parents, we want only the best for our kids.
The time of adolescence can be especially confusing as we see our children figure out who they are, and navigate the challenges of their environment. Having been through the process with experience and maturity, it may be tempting for us to hold a firm hand and direct them to do what needs to be done for them to have a better future.
But adolescence is also a time where children seek to establish independence, and their relationship with their parents during this time carry an important part in forming their self-concept. In our bid to help them become better, we often forget that the way we communicate with them matters—whether we stop to consider their feelings and needs before we correct them, or whether we are shaming them instead empowering them.
Relationships are built on conversation, and positive conversations can go a long way in making our child stay engaged with us, to willingly cooperate, and to be genuinely considerate of others.
Learn how you can approach conversations with your tweens and teens with less stress and more success in this 2 session workshop by Lim Kim Pong, CEO and Founder of StrengthsAsia. You'll get to understand
1. How you can change your talk from habitual and unconscious to purposeful, persuasive and engaging
2. Tips on how to connect with your child using positive communication
3. The role of empathic listening in our conversation

Our Remarkable Story
On Saturday 27 November Niyati and Purvi, both Year 8 students at KGV, competed in the Fobisia Virtual Gymnastics Invitational, hosted by Bangkok Patana School. Approximately 400 athletes, across a range of age groups, participated in this competition over 2 days. Both Niyati and Purvi performed exceptionally well in their routines with Niyati receiving a Gold medal in WAG L4 Senior category and Purvi achieving a top 10 finish. Clearly their hard work and dedication paid off as they have been attending at least 8-hours of intensive gymnastics training every week. Congratulations to both students on their wonderful achievement.
