Principal's message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for your support as the end of the school year draws closer. It has been a challenging week with an edging up of COVID cases across Hong Kong and several staff and students at our school have also been impacted. We have continued to reinforce our safety measures, as well as put a hold on any mask-off activities, such as swimming. We are doing all we can to keep face-to-face learning happening until the end of next week.
Yesterday, I attended an online meeting with our ESF CEO Belinda Greer and other ESF Principals, where we all shared the highlights of the past school year. In challenging times, we can sometimes fall into the trap of focusing on problems and issues and this can often swamp the great things that are happening. At the meeting, I shared one of my positive highlights of the year by recently attending one of our regular “Friday Feedback” parent sessions. Several parents of graduating Year 13 students attended, with the specific purpose of providing reflections on the past seven years as a parent at ESF KGV. Their comments were the highlights I shared with Belinda and other ESF Principals. The parents spoke about:
How happy their child was to have attended ESF and KGV and the great friends that they have made. I know as a parent, seeing your child in positive relationships with peers is important for their independence, wellness and happiness.
The quality of the teaching and how above all else, the teachers care about the students and know them well. When all is said and done, a school is always defined by the learning that happens in classrooms and the quality of the relationship between staff and students
How excited (and nervous!) they were about their child attending their University course of choice and the possibility of moving onto another phase of their lives. This made me think about the crucial role we play together, to equip our students with the skills and attributes to thrive in an exciting, dynamic and uncertain future.
How the time at KGV provided a world of opportunity for their child. Whether it be Challenge Week, the orchestra, a netball team, or extra help in class, the ‘richness’ of the learning experiences is what makes education worth having. I reflected on the extra effort our staff go to as we provide these experiences and the value that comes from this
The extra support their child has received, whether it be from Student Counsellors, Higher Education Counsellors, Heads of Year, Teachers and Tutors and how they all played a role. This made me reflect on the fact that we are all on our learning journey. A school striving towards equity for all students, makes sure that every student gets the support they need, on their way to ‘being their own remarkable’
Finally, the sharing session made me reflect on all the great work happening across our ESF schools. In these challenging times, we are better together. The comments from parents reflected strong partnerships, especially between the parents and the school. As I often say, it is always about ‘your child and our student,’ as we do all we can to help our young people to be the best they can be.
Take care and have a great weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mark Blackshaw.

With many families hoping to travel after next week, please ensure you conduct RAT and temperature checks each day and do not send your child to school if they are displaying any symptoms of illness. We will remind students to wear their masks and social distancing to keep the community as safe as possible.

Year 7 Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It is hard to believe we are down to the final week of term and our amazing students have nearly completed one of the most challenging academic years. The Year 7 team continues to be exceptionally proud and humbled by their resilience and determination to make the most of their time in school.
Mr Turner, our MYP Coordinator and I will be reviewing End of Year Reports during the first half of next week and aim to have Year 7 End of Year Reports to you by Friday 24th June. These grades will not only give you a summary of your child’s summative assessments throughout the year, but they will also give a final indication of achievement for each subject area.
Friday is our final day of term and we will have lessons in periods 1 and 2, with then an extended break before we complete the year with an online whole school assembly. Students will be in dress casual for the day and be dismissed at 12 pm. School buses have been notified.
Please encourage your child to clear their lockers before Friday. We do not want food rotting in them over the holidays.
Next week we will send out our information packs to parents to help you get organised for next year.
We are nearly there…….
Have a great weekend.

Year 9 Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It is hard to believe we are down to the final week of term and our amazing students have nearly completed one of the most challenging academic years. The Year 9 team continues to be exceptionally proud and humbled by their resilience and determination to make the most of their time in school.
What a great week this week seeing all of the students celebrate their achievements from the Community Project as they took part in the Assessment Presentations. Even though this is assessed, what is important as an outcome is that the students now understand what is involved to investigate and plan a project that leads to meaningful service as action. These skills will stand them in good stead higher up the school as they become more and more involved in service projects. Take a look at some of the actions celebrated on the Community Project Padlet.

We will be having our MYP celebrations on Wednesday next week. This is when students will receive their KGV MYP certificates.

Graduating Class of 2022 - Exit Advice
We’d like to remind you all about some very important action points for your steps:
- IBO Result Service. This is a service offered by IBO to send students’ final IB results directly to the institution of students’ choice. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is for students to subscribe to this service. Not only is it the most efficient and fastest way to have your official IB results sent (including remarks), universities regard this as the official IB results for securing student offers.
KGV Exam Office is responsible for coordinating this for our IB students. The deadline to sign up was 25 May. If you have missed the deadline, please email: exam@kgv.edu.hk.
- KGV Final Transcripts – IB students. You can pick up two hard copies of your final transcript from the Careers Office on 8 July, between 08:00 and 15:00. If you cannot come in person on 8 Jul, we will mail your final transcript in the week of 11 Jul. Do check your Hong Kong residential address on Lionel and email us if there is any change. If you will be out of Hong Kong and like us to send your final transcript to an overseas residential address, please complete this form, by 24 June 2022.
- KGV Final Transcripts – BTEC students. We will mail you your final transcript when it is ready. Please ensure your address on Lionel is current, or provide us an overseas residential address for us to mail your final transcript.
- Official IB & BTEC certificates issued by Exam Boards. These are coordinated by our Exam Office and should be ready after the summer break. Please look out for correspondence on collection.
Year 12 H.E. Presentation Series
We are nearing the end of our Y12 HE presentations series. In our last session next week (22 Jun @ 13:30), we will have Summer Action Plan to run through various preparation for higher education before returning to Year 13 after the summer break.

Congratulations to Chloe Wan (Year 12) who has won the 2022 Princeton Book Award that recognises academic, service and leadership excellence.
The Year 9 Global Perspectives students here at KGV recently had the opportunity to hear a presentation from David Begbie, the Director of Crossroads Foundation and a senior spokesman for the humanitarian aid and development organisation, headquartered in Hong Kong. Over the past 25 years, he has spoken widely about the work of this organisation, including representing them at United Nations events. He maintains that strategic change only comes about if we all, as individuals, choose to ‘be the change’ we wish to see.
Students were able to hear the first-hand experiences, challenges and opportunities that exist when a person knows that they want to help or commit to service, but are not sure exactly How they can get themselves involved. David navigated the students through the work that he and his team have conducted to connect people in need with the people who have a surplus, which gave a fascinating insight into service-learning and the logistics and skill sets required to grow a charitable organisation. As a result, students left the presentation with a sense of self-belief that no matter how small a difference you can make, it is still worthwhile to do so. This learning will now allow students to pitch for revenue to loan Kick-starter projects using the KIVA platform with the theme of poverty reduction. More on this coming up soon!
If you’d like any more information about our IGCSE/ IBDP Geography or Environmental Systems and Societies courses, please do not hesitate to contact Jim Schofield, Head of Geography, ESS and Global Perspectives.
