Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope you are all well and that your son/daughter came home this week with some positive stories of the first few days at school. There was a real vibrancy to our school in the first week back, and it was heartwarming to see our young people connect again with peers and meet their teachers for the first time in a few months.
Last year’s (I)GCSE results came out. Our initial analysis indicates that our current Year 12 students (Year 11 students last year) have done extremely well and produced some of the best results in the school's history! Of the total grades issued to our students, 47% of the grades were the top grade of A*/9-8, and 69% were A*-A/9-7 or above. Nearly 20% of our students achieved eight or more A*/9 grades across their subjects. Truly remarkable! Congratulations to our students and parents, and a shout out to our incredible staff who work hard with our students to achieve these results. The results are particularly remarkable, considering our students' challenges with reducing face-to-face learning due to COVID.
A couple of things:
Thank you for supporting the T8 signal on Thursday. I appreciate the frustration of missing a school day, especially in the first week. However, we hope the communication about the school closure was clear and timely via the ESF App, Website, emails and WhatsApp.
Thank you for supporting our KGV Student Dress Code. Our students presented well at school this week. Our school uniform plays a key role in our inclusivity and equity plan, allowing all students the opportunity to present well, especially considering the socio-economic circumstances within our community. It also takes the stress away for many students regarding ‘what will I wear today?’.
A reminder that students should not bring nuts and nut products to school. Some of our students are allergic to nuts, and not bringing them helps to keep our students safe
The Challenge Week website for 2022 launched today. Challenge Week will run from Monday, 31 October to Friday, 4 November and involve all KGV students and staff. Students aged 7 and 13 will have a week of activities organised for them, and details will be provided on the website soon. Students in years 8,9,10,11, and 12 can choose from various activities designed to engage them in experiential learning that challenges them to go beyond their comfort zone. Students and parents in Year 8 to 12 should visit the Challenge Week website and begin exploring the activities available.
Students can now register for CAS or Extra-curricular activities on Lionel. Only students who are double vaccinated for at least 14 days can participate in extra-curricular or mask-off activities (e.g. swimming in PE lessons). Please update the vaccination records for your child(ren) in the App. Tap on Lionel 2 VLE, scroll down to Covid-19 Health Vaccination Pass and tap on the blue ‘here’ to complete the form and upload the vaccination certificate.
We all still need to complete a RAT Test and take our temperatures, recording this on the ESF App each morning before coming to school each day. Please set up a routine to enable this to be completed each morning.
Thank you again for your support as we get our school year up and running. It has been such a great week to have all our students back. We currently have 1901 students enrolled in our school, with many more on our waiting list! It is a privilege to partner with you, as we do all we can to ensure our young people have every opportunity to - ‘be their own remarkable’.
Kind Regards,
Mark Blackshaw
Principal, KGV School
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Congratulations, you have made it to the end of week one at KGV! What a whirlwind of a week. Please pass on our congratulations to your child, as we have been exceptionally proud of them and their resilience this week.
I would like to address the issue of the parent WhatsApp group! This can be a wonderful resource for parents to support each other and ask questions. At the moment, it is overwhelming and parents ask questions that have been previously asked and answered. I don’t think this is a sustainable form of communication in its current form. Please can I respectfully ask you to read through emails and ESF App messages carefully and speak to your child first for clarification before posting on WhatsApp? Year 7s are doing an excellent job and will often have the answers you seek. Thank you for being so supportive in maintaining a platform which we can use in an effective manner.
Please find below some points to help you and your child prepare for next week;
Next week we will follow Week 2 timetable
Monday is an early finish for students. Lessons finish at 2:05 pm when students are dismissed. The school buses are aware of this.
1st September is our fire drill day. Students will be informed beforehand.
Please continue to provide your child with a packed lunch. Please remember that we are a nut-free school and snacks should not contain nuts of any kind.
Students must complete a RAT each morning and you must update information on the ESF App.
We still have a few people who still have outstanding information on the Health Declaration. Please can you make sure you have completed the form as soon as possible?
Students must have 2 vaccines to participate in our ECA/CAS programme.
On 8th September, students will sit for their MIDYIS assessment. Students cannot prepare for this assessment. The data it provides enables us to support (and extend) your child through their studies.
You may see information regarding KGV Challenge Week. This does not require any action at the moment from Year 7 parents. More information will be given to you on 5th September.
We have a couple of opportunities for Year 7 parents to learn more about KGV.
5th September is our laptop distribution day. Parents are invited to school from 3 pm - 5 pm, where we will;
Meet the tutor
Have an MYP Presentation
Have a laptop session
Have a presentation from PTSA, Head of Year etc.
Students will remain in school at the end of the school day and join you for some of these sessions. At other times, they will work with some of our student leaders. Please make a note in your diaries.
14th September is our New Parent Coffee Morning. This will be an online event from 10:30 am - 11:30 am, where parents are invited to meet and talk to staff linked to Year 7 students.
Thanks so much for your support this week. Wishing you and your family a lovely weekend.
The Year 7 Team
It has been good to see our Year 11 students back in school this week.
The Challenge Week website launched today and we hope that your child will discuss potential choices with you over the next few weeks.
Due to the T8 yesterday, many Year 11 students will have their school photos next Monday.
Please help us to ensure that every child has completed a RAT and temperature check each morning and that you have updated this information in the ESF App. We are required to check and follow up with every student.
It was a warm KGV welcome to our new Year 8 and Year 9 students on Tuesday, 23 August. Our new students completed a full-day induction programme led by Mr Tranter, Ms Gaille, Ms MacDonald and Mr Carrell. Our new Year 8 & 9 students are excited about being part of the KGV community and getting involved in all that KGV offers.

It was great to welcome all of our new Year 10 students this week, including 32 students who are new to KGV.
Please ensure you have made a booking for the Tutor-led conference next Monday. The relationship between you and your child's tutor is significant to providing consistent care and support. To make a booking, tap "Lionel 2 VLE" in the ESF app and scroll down to appointments.
Yellis testing will take place next week. This is a baseline test, similar to the MidYis test done in Year 7, and provides data that will help us cater to individual needs and help our progress monitoring. It takes one period and is not something students can study or prepare for. We will share the results with you when they are available.

Dear Parents & Students,
Seeing the amount of interest in the CAS program is great. In just the first few days, there have been over 1200 active sign-ups.
CAS Activities will remain open for sign up next week, closing Sunday 4th of September. New activities are still being added every day, so please continue to check the KGV CAS Activities website (https://www.kgvcasactivities.com/), but for the full details, please look at the activities page on LIONEL.
Whilst the current situation remains fairly stable, we are also looking ahead and requesting your understanding of the possibility that changes and adaptations may still be necessary due to changes in circumstances..
We will have to abide by the rules and guided directives from EDB and ESF, which may involve changes such as rescheduling, cancellation, a shortened program and so on at short notice. We will do our best to communicate any changes as clearly and as soon as possible through the KGV bulletin, ESF App, website or email. To that note, only students that have received their second dose of the vaccination (or have a recovery certificate) will be eligible to sign up for CAS activities.
If you have experienced any problems with signing up due to your Vaccination records, please try again as the system is now updated to accommodate the different scenarios..
A reminder that registration is NOT on a first-come-first-served basis. All students registered will be placed on the waiting list until the end of the registration period. If the number of enrolment exceeds the maximum number of participants, names will be drawn randomly by Lionel only to allocate those that have been pre-approved by parents to join the activity.

Term 1 Activities are due to start the week of September 13th.
