Principal's message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Just a quick note to thank all in the community who were able to attend and support our Community Event last night centred around our Christmas Corals concert. It was amazing to see over 500 guests come into our school, with some of our parents commenting that they could not remember the last time they had been on campus!
There was a positive vibe at KGV with all the activities going on, such as the Alumni and student sporting events, 50 student stalls, Cheer Leading, creative writing and art activities, and Design Technology displays, to name a few. In many ways, the Community Event signals a new and exciting phase as we move away from some of the Covid created limitations that hampered our connections with parents and the community. We are looking forward to more opportunities for events next term.
A shout out to VP Carole Beer for leading and organising the Community Event and our excellent Music Department and students for the incredible show. Thanks also to all other staff involved in the event and our amazing students, whether performers or organisers. The talent amongst our students is remarkable!
The week of parent and community engagement was also strongly evident when we participated in our third Learning Review (parent-teacher night) on Tuesday this week. The feedback from parents was positive, and the dedication of the staff was evident. Incredibly together, we participated in a total of over 9500 interviews across the last two weeks!
Just a reminder that the last day of the term is next Friday, 16 December, with students finishing at around 12:15 pm.
Have a great weekend.
Mark Blackshaw
Principal, KGV School
In assembly this week we spent time explaining to students the difference between assessment grades, Current Attainment Grades (CAGs) and their Grade Point Average. All this data is shown in Lionel and is accessible live through the ESF App. Lionel 2 VLE > CCF > Expand the Overview drawer.
Now that the first round of assessments is mostly complete, there will be some interesting data there for you to discuss with your child.
We also talked about Good stress vs Bad Stress. Good stress is the type that encourages you to meet deadlines and apply yourself. Bad stress is when you worry about things beyond your control or set yourself unrealistic or unattainable goals. Please discuss this with your child to ensure they have a healthy approach to assessments and managing themselves.
As we head into the last week of term, I have noticed that many students seem a little tired. Please support them through the final week before a well-deserved break.
Year 11 Mock exams will run from Monday, 30 Jan. through to Friday, 10 Feb. You can see the live timetable here. Please do not print it out - some details are likely to change in the lead-up to the mocks next year.
Please also go through the exam rules with your child when you can.
Please have a conversation with your child about their study plans for the break. Our recommendation is a small amount every day. We want students to have a rest and feel like they are making progress towards being prepared for examinations.
You can see dates for the final GCSE exams in May and June next year here. The timing on each day is not yet available.
At the end of next week, we will publish a summary of all the assessment results for this term, alongside descriptions of the assessments and the current attainment grade for each subject. This data is all available live through the ESF app, the summary is for your convenience.
Provisional option choices are done now. Please ask your child to show you their choices in Lionel if they haven't done so already. When we seek the final option choices in February, parents will be emailed with details of the choices and asked to confirm.
Year 12 Message
We are looking forward to our Student Leadership handover next week. We will be hosting a Year 12 & 13 assembly and our current Head Prefects will be "handing over the baton" to our incoming Head Prefects Carina Greene and Shashvat Suresh.
We congratulate Carina and Shashvat on their appointment and wish them every success in their new roles. We will also have the opportunity to welcome on board all of our new Prefects and House Captains.
A reminder that we finish next Friday, 16 December at 12:15 pm for our winter holidays.
Wishing you a great weekend!
Year 13 Message
Please see below our Year 13 Mock Exam timetable commencing Monday, 9 January and finishing on Friday, 20 January. A reminder that IB classes will be suspended during the Mock exam period.

Wishing you a great weekend.
Congratulations to all the Year 8 & 9 students who participated in a wide range of activities we had on offer for KGV Creative Arts Week. Congratulations also to all the Year 8 & 9 students who showcased their creative talent in a Drama or Music performance and/or had their creative work in Art or Media Studies displayed. It was heartwarming to see so many of our KGV Community at the Carol Concert on Thursday night. The opportunity to connect with others was a positive way to boost our collective well-being and get into the holiday spirit.
Students will be able to sign up for Term 2 CAS activities from Monday 12th of December and this will remain open until Friday 6th of January. Please see more detailed information later in the Newsletter. Remember to check the KGV CAS Activities website for all things related to the activities program ([Web Link]). For information about signing up, withdrawal, allocation and parental approval click here.
On Friday 16 December we will follow a normal timetable for Periods 1 and 2 as well as tutor time. After our break, there will be a whole school assembly on the field and students will be dismissed at approximately 12:15 pm. This will be a Dress Casual Day for students with a Charity Collection to take place in Tutor Time.
Have a great weekend.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week students have fully immersed themselves in our KGV Creative Arts Week. It was wonderful to see so many Year 7 students taking part in music, drama, art and media workshops and performances. They worked alongside our teachers and guest artists to learn more about a range of creative arts opportunities.
Last night, Year 7 students also played a huge part in our KGV Community Celebration. Thank you to those parents and caregivers who were able to come along and support this event. Some of our parents even participated in our featured netball game! It was wonderful to see so many of you at KGV and we hope you enjoyed our evening.
Thank you too to those parents who attended this week’s Learning Review. In total, our staff have facilitated nearly 10,000 conversations with parents, as we strive to support your child, our student.
Next week our Nightingale and Upsdell students will be completing their Challenge Week Make-Up Day. A separate email has been sent to these parents.
Friday is our half-day finish (12 pm) ahead of the holidays. Students are encouraged to wear festive clothes, festive colours and bring HK$20 to pay for our school charities.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 7 Team
Approaches to learning (ATL) are skills designed to enable students in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) to “learn how to learn.”
They are intended to apply across curriculum requirements and provide a common language for teachers and students to use when reflecting and building on the process of learning.
ATL skills can also become a common language at home between parents and their children.
Challenge your child to reflect on the “I CAN” statements as written in the attached document.
Ask your child to reflect on what they need to do to be able to render this statement true.

It’s been an incredibly busy and fun packed Term 1 for CAS Activities which makes for a welcome change after the past year. Under our activities term blocking format, most Term 1 activities end today, Friday 9th of December.
It has been great to see so many students embrace the opportunities on offer, see our creative arts groups perform and watch our sports teams compete again. A few numbers in brief:
Parents and students will have received an App message this week explaining the timeline and process for Term 2. Students will be able to sign up for Term 2 activities from Monday 12th of December and this will remain open until Friday 6th of January. During this time, students can enrol and withdraw from activities to plan their program. Following this, we will go through the allocation process and students/parents will be informed via App message if they have been successfully placed and if not allocated, they will remain on the wait list and be notified when a space becomes available.
Remember to check the KGV CAS Activities website for all things related to the activities program (https://www.kgvcasactivities.com/). Information about signing up, withdrawal, allocation and parental approval click here.
Finally, I would like to thank parents for your support with allowing students to take part in the CAS program. I would also welcome any feedback or suggestions you have to both improve the CAS program by identifying particular activities that you would like to see offered at KGV.

KGV School References
The KGV Careers Office is coordinating all references for students. KGV School has a closed reference policy. School references are treated with the strictest confidentiality and are sent only to the institution that makes a request. Students and their families do not get to see their school reference.
Reference for Y13s’ higher education application: All current Y13 students have a school reference in place as one of the support school documents. There is no need for students to make a request. Students should work closely with their H.E. Counsellor for their applications.
References for non-higher education purpose, including potential exit, summer school, scholarship, etc.: Parents should inform the Careers Office by email, providing purpose and contact for sending the reference. Normal lead time for teachers to work on school references is 4-6 working weeks.
