Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our Mission - To be your own remarkable…
Our students generally seemed refreshed and keen to be back at school after the break. We want to congratulate the Year 13 students for the conscientious way they have approached the IB Diploma Mock exams, which started on Monday this week.
We look forward to our Lunar New Year celebration assembly next Friday. The main positive characteristics of the water Rabbit are gentle and amicable and the ability to adjust readily to different conditions. This sounds like exactly what we may need now and in the year ahead! As part of our celebration, our assembly will showcase our local Chinese culture and how other cultures celebrate the Lunar New Year. Of course, we are all looking forward to the always noisy and spectacular Lion Dance as a highlight of our celebrations. Next Friday, we are scheduled to finish at 12.15 pm after the celebration assembly.
We hosted Kowloon Junior Year 3 students for a campus tour this week as part of their unit of inquiry. It was wonderful to get some lovely feedback from KJS staff about how naturally engaging, polite and cheerful our KGV students were as they engaged with them informally around the campus. In these unstructured and unscripted interactions, you often feel the ‘real’ character of our students and school. It was pleasing to hear that the school values of Honesty, Courage and Empathy shone through for the students, teachers and parents from Kowloon Junior School to see, hear and feel.
It also made me reflect that the feedback reinforced what we are trying to achieve as described in our vision: We create a ‘school for one’, a place where each student feels that the school was created just for them. Through a lived experience, we all feel a deep sense of belonging, identity, and purpose.
Students in Years 11 and 13 received data summaries at the end of term 1. These summarised all the assessment results produced during that term. Students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 will receive a similar summary immediately before the CNY break. Academic data is live and available through the ESF App in the CCF area of Lionel at all times; however, the data summary collates all the results into a single document for our parents and may be useful to guide discussions with your child about their progress. If the summary raises questions or concerns, please get in touch with your child’s tutor in the first instance. This data complements the direct feedback from teachers to parents through the online learning review meetings late last term, the mock exam reports for Years 11 and 13 in February and the written reports for all other year levels in June.
Our new sports gymnasium is progressing well and is on track to be finished in May this year. It is designed as a cross-fit functional exercise space to be used by PE classes and our inter-school sporting teams. The ample indoor space opens up through large retractable glass doors onto the hockey and football pitches and will add to our integrated training and physical education facilities.
This a reminder that we are following EDB expectations that all students, staff and visitors to our school complete a daily RAT and have their temperature scanned. We thank our parents for supporting this process. Your son and daughter are being provided with extra RAT kits from our school.
Have a good weekend.
Mark Blackshaw,
Principal, KGV School
Mock exams are fast approaching for Year 11. We held an assembly this week where we talked about the rules and logistics as well as reminding students to keep these exams in perspective and to reach out if they are feeling any anxiety.
You can access the exam schedule here and see the rules and regulations for exams here.
The purpose of the mocks is to motivate students to revise, give them feedback on areas for improvement and also simulate the experience of the final exams. This experience should reassure them that they can handle the preparation and process of multiple exams so they can be focused and prepared for their finals.
We have enjoyed a book named "The Self-Driven Child" by William Stixrud and Ned Johnson. Here is a short excerpt from the book where they discuss stress and how as parents we can guide our children.
Please encourage your child to revise and prepare over the Lunar New Year break and to look after themselves in terms of sleep, exercise, rest and diet so they feel ready for these exams. If you notice any signs of anxiety or undue worry, please reach out to their tutor in the first instance.
During the mocks that run from Monday, 30 Jan to Friday, 10 Feb, students only need to be in school if they have an exam. However, they are welcome to study in school as well. They should wear uniforms and use their exam pass to arrive late or leave early.
Year 10 Message
Year 10 has made a good start to Term 2, with the uniform worn well and arriving in class on time.
Year 10 students will receive a summary of all academic data at the end of next week. This data is available live in the CCF section of Lionel, accessible through the ESF App.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Happy New Year to you and your family. We hope you had a fabulous break. The students came back refreshed and rested and eager to start the term. This week they have worked hard and seemed to have settled back into their studies with renewed enthusiasm.
Next Friday we will be providing you with an overview of your child’s academic performance throughout Semester One of this academic year.
A reminder that next Friday is a dress casual day for students (a Lunar New Year theme). Students are invited to donate towards school charities as part of this dress casual day. We will mark the Lunar New Year with a KGV celebration prior to a 12.15 pm finish. School buses have been informed. Students will only have two lessons on Friday and these would be the lessons they normally have in Period 4 and Period 5.
Have a great weekend.

We are committed to supporting our parents through their journey at KGV, therefore have created several opportunities for you to engage with the school. ‘Feedback Friday‘ is one such opportunity for you to engage in a personalised, small group session on a Friday to chat with the Principal, Mark Blackshaw, on various topics or areas you would like to discuss.
Our upcoming sessions will be on
Friday, 3 February 2023, 10.30-11.15 am
Friday, 17 February 2023. 10.30-11.15 am

If you would like to attend a session this term, please sign up on this form.
It’s great to see the excitement building around the campus with the Term 2 CAS Activity program starting next week (Monday 16 January). Following the recent adjustment to the anti-epidemic measures that all students can join extra-curricular activities, it will be nice to know that all KGV students have access to the program.
Allocation has happened so we hope the students have managed to find something to engage in this term. Please see some notes about what happens next
If students didn’t get a space on their chosen activity, they will remain on the waitlist and be notified when a space becomes available
There are a number of activities that still have spaces available and students are able to browse Lionel and sign up anytime from today.
For activities that require an additional fee, students and parents will be notified of what that fee is and how to pay the provider.
New activities are often added to the program as we progress through the term so please remind students to check the student bulletin and check the activity section on Lionel.
I would also like to draw your attention to Sports Trials taking place: Sports team trials for C Grade (Y7-9) basketball, volleyball and football. Students can sign up on LIONeL if they want to take part in the following trials. (C Grade refers to those that are born on or after 1 January, 2009)
Only those that have their parents' approval will be allowed to take part in the trials.
Finally, if students have changed their mind and/or their circumstances, which means they cannot take part, please encourage them to contact their teacher or student leaders directly as there could be someone sitting waiting that could take their place.
I look forward to seeing the school campus buzzing again with activity next week. If you have any questions, please contact the CAS Team directly.

ESF University Fair 2023 (virtual) – IMPORTANT!!

9 Feb: ESF University Fair: Asia/Australia/New Zealand
16 Feb: ESF University Fair: North America
The University Fair is targeted to students in Y12 (mandatory) and Y11 and their parents. A briefing session is scheduled on 17 Jan during Tutor Time for students to go through registration procedures and preparation for the Fair.
Parents are also invited to join the virtual Fair. A separate email will be soon sent to Y12 & Y11 parents with registration procedures.
HE Resources via Google Classroom. All resources for higher education applications are available via Google Classroom, including internal deadlines. Students should look out for announcements & reminders. Y13s should ensure they are keeping their paces with applications.
Student official full names are used on school transcripts. We would like to ask parents to check that their children’s official full name in the school record matches that on their identity documents. This is especially so when students are known in school by their preferred names which may not be their official names. Unmatched names may cause difficulties with university offers.
Year 13
Year 12
We hope our Year 12 students have settled in well in Term 1 with their IB/BTEC courses.
KGV School References
The KGV Careers Office is coordinating all references for students. KGV School has a closed reference policy. School references are treated with the strictest confidentiality and are sent only to the institution that makes a request. Students and their families do not get to see their school reference.
Reference for Y13s’ higher education application: All current Y13 students have a school reference in place as one of the support school documents. There is no need for students to make a request. Students should work closely with their H.E. Counsellor for their applications.
References for non-higher education purposes, including potential exit, summer school, scholarship, etc.: Parents should inform the Careers Office by email, providing purpose and contact for sending the reference. The normal lead time for teachers to work on school references is 4-6 working weeks.
