Principal's message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Please stay safe with the T8 now hoisted and the typhoon getting closer this evening and tomorrow. We hope our students accessed the online work provided by our teachers today and connected online with their tutor. Thank you for supporting ‘your child and our student’ at home today so they continue learning even though the school was closed.
The impact of the storm across the weekend is still uncertain. I will update you on Sunday evening, hopefully confirming that school will be open on Monday next week.
Please stay safe across the weekend.
Take care.
Mark Blackshaw.
Principal, KGV School.
Year 10 Message
The Tutor-led conferences for Year 10 students and parents are scheduled for Monday afternoon. The goal of the meeting is for you to make a connection with your child's tutor who will be a key guide and point of contact over the next two years. The meetings will be in Google Meet. You can install the app on your device or use a laptop and it will run in the browser. To find the link for the meeting, go into the appointments system and click from there or use the option that sends the link to yourself in an email.
Next Friday, Year 10 students will sit the Yellis baseline test. This test measures developed abilities and is not something students can study for or should worry about. More detailed information is in this letter for Year 10 parents.
I hope everyone has been safe so far in this typhoon and continues to be safe through the weekend.
Year 11 Message
We hope that Year 11 students are now settling into a routine that includes regular revision, careful organisation of notes and tracking of syllabus statements. Students have the skills to do all these things after receiving specific training last year. Please encourage them to work as they go so they feel they are on top of their work and on track to be ready for their exams.
I hope everyone has been safe so far in this typhoon and continue to be safe through the weekend.
Year 12 Message
The Tutor-led conferences for Year 12 students and parents are scheduled for Monday afternoon.
All Y12 students taking the IB Diploma or studying for any IB Courses will be taking the ALIS computer adaptive test in school on Wednesday 6th September.
ALIS is a baseline assessment provided by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), a research centre at the University of Durham, UK. ALIS is an innovative assessment which adapts the level of its questions to suit the responses given by the student. Unfortunately, the ALIS test currently does not assess against potential performance in BTEC subjects. The computer test will last less than 1h15m. Please see the details regarding date and venue below:
Remarks: 1. Candidates should bring their own fully charged laptop and a pen to the venue.
2. Please note that calculators must not be used during the assessment.
3. Students should arrive the venue 10 mins before the test starts. Random seating.
ALIS results will be used in school to:
• Identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses in order to inform teaching and learning
• Identify students who may be underachieving
• Monitor academic progress according to a student’s individual ability
• Help set individual targets with students for IB Diploma
Students are not required to do any extra work in preparation for the ALIS test. As mentioned previously, the test, together with other information, will be used to support students in their learning.
Wishing you a safe weekend.
Year 13 Message
We want to thank all of our Year 13 students who helped us this week in providing feedback and allowing IBO to observe their lessons as part of our 5 Year IB review process which concluded on Wednesday.
IBO were hugely impressed with our students and commended them for their communication and interpersonal skills as well as their ability to adapt with the challenges of recent years.
Our Year 13 students are a tremendous asset to our KGV community and we rely on them to show leadership for all of our younger students as we strive to improve the learning experience for all of our students.
Wishing you a safe weekend.
Year 8 Message
Our Year 8 students have now completed a cycle of their 10-day timetable, meeting all their new teachers and finding new classrooms. If you haven’t already done so, please go into Lionel and sign up for the online Tutor Led Conference on Monday, 4 September. This conference will allow you to meet your child's tutor online and get an update on how your child has progressed these first few weeks of Year 8.
The Challenge Week 2023 website is now open, with options and information available. Students have had time to look at what is on offer, and they should now be talking to you about this with you at home, especially the cost. Sign-up for Year 8 will be on Friday, 8th September.
Next week, we have our first House Assemblies for the 2022/2023 academic year. Our Senior House Captains are looking forward to rallying their house for the upcoming Swimming Gala on 15 September.
MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) Focus for our Parent Newsletter: Self Management Skills - Home Learning Sessions
For your child to maximise their ability to study effectively, it is essential to be an organised learner. Study is required at home daily to get the best out of their learning,
Studying gives your child a challenge to extend themselves, follow up on topics that interest them, make new connections with what they already know and transfer knowledge, skills and attitudes across subjects.
The best way for your child to do this is to break up the time into study sessions. The number of sessions depends on the year level and how well-organised your child's study habits are. At the beginning of each week, your child should create a weekly plan of when to allocate time to their activities: home learning sessions, CAS, sports, friends, family, relaxation, etc.
Each Home Learning Session is 40 minutes long and comprises 30 minutes of uninterrupted work followed by a 10-minute break.
To ensure your child sticks to these times, they should write down reminders of when to begin, when to have a break and when to end their home learning sessions.
Your child will find that 30 minutes will test their concentration span; with practice, they will be able to increase it. Help your child to set appropriate and manageable goals. If they are tired, assist them in breaking their time into smaller pieces. This will help your child develop their focus and allow them to concentrate for extended periods.
Action for Parents: Ask your child what two things they will do now to improve their focus on home learning sessions.
Stay safe during the typhoon. The Year 8 team wishes you well.
Year 9 Message
Our Year 9 students have now completed a cycle of their 10-day timetable, meeting all their new teachers and finding new classrooms.
The Challenge Week 2023 website is now open, with options and information available. Students have had time to look at what is on offer, and they should now be talking to you about this with you at home, especially the cost. Sign-up for Year 9 will be on Thursday, 7th September.
On Monday, 4 September, Year 9 will attend the Careers Fair in the Hall during Period 5. It is to start them thinking about possible future pathways in preparation for IGCSE options later this term.
Next week, we have our first House Assemblies for the 2022/2023 academic year. Our Senior House Captains are looking forward to rallying their house for the upcoming Swimming Gala on 15 September.

Year 7 Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I hope your child was able to access the work set by teachers today and they were able to continue their learning safely at home.
Next week, Year 7 students will sit their MIDYIS assessment on Tuesday 5th September. An email has been sent to you providing detailed information. Students requiring separate exam venues will be informed by Ms Hitchings next week. Once students have sat the assessments, we will share the results with you and let you know how you can support your child at home.
As the typhoon edges closer to Hong Kong, I hope you and your families stay safe. Look after one another this weekend and Mr Blackshaw will email families on Sunday evening with any school updates.
Take care
The Year 7 Team

Dear Parents
You may be aware that when there are certain types of elections in Hong Kong, the Education Bureau (EDB) requires that all schools are closed the day after the election has taken place. Doing this allows schools, where required, to be used as polling stations.
There will be District Council elections taking place on Sunday December 10. As a result, EDB has notified us that all schools in Hong Kong should be closed on the following day: Monday December 11. This impacts all of our schools, whether they have been selected as a polling station or not. We have therefore added this date as an additional holiday day to the ESF calendar. You can access the 2023/24 calendar here..
If you require any further information, please contact KGV (Tel: 2711 3029 or Email: office@kgv.edu.hk).
