Principal's message
Dear Parents and Guardians
We hope you are all safe and did not experience too much property damage last night and today. We have had some water damage at KGV and will be busy with a cleanup in specific areas across the weekend.
I appreciate your support today in helping to ensure that learning continues online for our students. A shout-out to all our teachers for posting work online at short notice and when some faced challenging internet, Lionel and equipment issues.
A reminder that next Friday, we will have our first whole school swimming carnival since 2019! The students will be informed early next week regarding who is competing for their House. An ESF App message will be sent to all parents and students on Monday with the latest updates on the Swimming Gala organisation, venue, and transport arrangements.
The Swimming Gala is always a great day of House Spirit and a wonderful opportunity for our swimmers to compete against each other in front of their ‘screaming’ peers. This year, we have secured an indoor facility at Kowloon Park Swimming Pool, Tsim Sha Tsui, amplifying the noise and atmosphere.
Please take care and stay safe and dry.
Kind Regards
Mark Blackshaw,
Principal, KGV School.
Year 12 and 13 Message
We hope all of our students stayed safe during the Black Rain period overnight and today.
We are looking forward to another important week at KGV and our swimming carnival next Friday.
Please keep an eye out for a message from our Careers team regarding our upcoming KGV Uni fair on 18th September.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Year 7 Message
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your support today as we experienced our second Friday in a row of online learning. This one, however, was a little more unexpected and from the video on social media, perhaps more impactful than last week’s T10! I am sure your child coped amicably today and tried their best to complete the work set.
Next week’s highlight is our annual Swimming Gala, on Friday 15th September. As sent out yesterday, all the information you need to prepare your child for this day can be found here. Two important links within the document are: information about the school buses and sign up for a bus to bring your child back to KGV after the event. Please note, the event is held at Kowloon Park Swimming Pool and are asking for your support in making sure your child has transport arrangements in place to get to the pool. Once the event is finished, your child can either take the school bus, sign up for a place on a bus to bring them back to school, for them to go home from KGV in their normal manner, or you can give your permission for them to leave the pool and travel independently. Please talk to your child this weekend and make sure you have an agreed method for travelling to and from Kowloon Park for this event.
The House Captains are finalizing the swim lists for those students who will be competing in Friday’s Swimming Gala. This information will be sent out on Monday, along with a sign-up document for Parents who wish to come along and spectate.
Let’s hope the rain stops and the weather improves this weekend. Take care and look after each other.
The Year 7 Team.
Year 10 Message
Year 10 students signed up for Challenge Week on Wednesday. Activities will be finalised over the next week.
I hope you were able to make the Tutor-led conference last Monday and have made a connection with your child's tutor.
We had scheduled the Yellis test for today, but with the Black Rain closure of school, we will look for an opportunity in the near future to reschedule it.
I hope you have not had issues with flooding and have stayed safe and dry.
Year 11 Message
I hope everyone has stayed dry and safe today. Students should have found work set for them to complete at their own pace today. Please ensure they have completed all tasks and ticked them off in the online learning system.
I'm aware that in some subjects, students are preparing practise assessments and will be receiving feedback from their teachers. It is important that students note down and respond to any feedback they receive. They should also ask for further clarification from their teachers. Often students are shy to ask for this. Teachers need to know and want to help if a student is unsure of something so please encourage your child to be brave and ask. Keeping up and making sure you don't leave the classroom with doubts or misunderstandings is a key for successful preparation for GCSE exams.
Year 8 & 9 Message
There was much excitement during tutor time on Thursday for our Year 9s who signed up for their Challenge Week activities. Due to the school closure on Friday, Year 8 is postponed until Monday tutor time.
The Swimming Gala will be at Kowloon Park next Friday, 16 August. It is the first whole-school swimming gala for Years 8 and 9. Parents and students will receive the necessary information next week. Please review this information with your child and ensure they know what to do. Students are required to swipe in at Kowloon Park on arrival. If your child is absent from school on this day, please register their absence through the ESF App.
After last year's success, we continue with a termly Year 8 and 9 Honours Award focusing on the KGV expectations for students’ attendance, punctuality, uniform and behaviour. If they achieve the expectations below in Term 1, they will receive an Honours Award certificate:
At least 95% Attendance
No more than two lates to school
No uniform slips
No behaviour concerns
KGV School promotes an excellent punctuality record across all years to ensure students and staff have the maximum possible time to enable effective teaching and learning. A reminder that every student needs to swipe in when they arrive at school. Students who swipe into school after 8:10 am are considered late. Five weeks into Term 1, some Year 8-9 students are accumulating 'unexplained lates' to school. Please see our KGV Punctuality Guidelines for more information and our tiered response.
MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) Focus for our Parent Newsletter: Self Management Skills - Time Management
We all have 168 hours weekly to do everything we must and choose to do.
How often does your child say they feel time deficient? To avoid feeling time deficient, your child must understand where their time goes and do their must-dos first, as they are the most important things to do.
Actions for Parents:
Ask your child to complete this three-day task to help them understand where their time goes:
List everything you do for three weekdays, from when you rise to when you go to bed. Break up the day into before school/ at school/ after school/ sleep.
How much time do you spend:
Sleeping __
Eating __
Getting ready for school __
Home learning __
Travelling __
At school __
Sports/Exercising __
Leisure/TV/Screentime/Social Networking __
Part-time job __
Other __
Total hours: ____
Are there any time wasters that stand out? If so, make a list of them. Set time management goals that will help you overcome these time wasters.
By setting time management goals, you can control yourself and begin to self-correct.
Action for Parents: Ask your child to identify two changes they can make to improve their time management.
We wish you a safe weekend.

Student Wellbeing
The KGV Student Wellbeing Prefects and Ambassadors have been hosting a new “Games Hub” in the GLT! The activity targets the Year 7s, but all students are welcome to join, chill out in the air conditioning, play board games and relax to different songs!
We hope to provide a safe space for the new students to forge friendships as they settle into the new learning environment. We ultimately wish to foster community and inclusivity within our school. Our past sessions have been successful, and it was great seeing the students share their energy with those around them!
The activities will be hosted every Thursday at lunchtime in the GLT. We’d love more students to join us in the next few weeks. Everyone is welcome, so bring along some snacks, friends and games!
Reiss Lau (KGV Wellbeing Prefect - Year 13)
The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, 25 multiple choice question first round Challenge aimed at students year 13 or below. The problems on the Senior Maths Challenge are designed to make students think, with stimulating problems for both beginners and experienced problem-solvers – more information is available here: https://ukmt.org.uk/senior-challenges
The Challenge will take place after school on Wednesday, 4th October. There is a nominal entry fee (between $20-$130 depending on how many students sign up), which parents will be invoiced for through our school’s ePayment system.
All students receive a certificate of participation. To recognise the highest performers in the Challenge, the top-scoring 66% of participants are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1. Students that are 'Best in Year' or 'Best in School' also receive a badge to denote this on their certificates, which is most impressive for university applications. Students who wish to be considered for nomination to HKAGE’s International Mathematical Olympiad later this year should take part.
If your child wishes to sign up, please have them fill in the google form posted in the Student Bulletin by the deadline of Monday, 11th September. And please encourage them to keep an eye on the Bulletin for other maths competitions, such as the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competition (AMC) and the University of Waterloo CEMC Canadian Mathematics Contests, that are coming soon!
