Principal's message
Dear Parents and Guardians
I wish all our students and families a Happy Mid-Autumn with longevity and good fortune. This is my final day as Principal at KGV School, and it has been a pleasure to be part of the KGV learning community since August 2017. Being Principal at KGV School has been an honour and privilege, and to contribute to our school's history and future.
I want to thank you all for your incredible support over the years. Parents play such a vital role in the education of our young people, and the successes we achieve are always a result of an open and positive partnership with our parents and caregivers. I have always welcomed feedback as we strive to make the school a better place for the students and community we serve.
My KGV experience will be somewhat defined by how we coped with some unique and challenging events. I am proud of how we worked together and ensured that learning continued for our students. Your role in supporting your child and our students to learn from home over the past years has been exceptional. In many ways, as a community, we have become stronger and more connected than ever before.
I wish our new Interim Principal, Mr. Mark Poulsum, all the best in this role. In my new role at ESF, I look forward to continuing my involvement with KGV as we go from strength to strength.
Kind Regards.
Mark Blackshaw
Principal, KGV School.
Year 10 & 11 Message
Students are tackling a number of assessments at the moment. Please keep an eye out for any increased levels of anxiety. Remind your child that assessments are for feedback only to help them improve towards their final exams.
In assembly this week I discussed the substance misuse policy that all students and staff in ESF schools are bound by. This was from the perspective of how important it is to make sure that KGV is a safe space and I wanted to provide clarity so that students can keep themselves and others safe. You can see a summary of the key points here.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for attending yesterday evening's online Challenge Week meeting, where we also provided some information on the recent MIDYIS assessment. As promised, Year 7 tutors distributed MIDYIS assessment scores today. Please check your child's bag when they get home. A reminder that the MIDYIS score provides one more piece of information on your child and does not define them. If you have any questions, please contact your child's tutor in the first instance.

Year 12 and 13 Message
In our Year 12 and 13 assembly this week, we discussed the ESF substance misuse policy that all students and staff in ESF schools are bound by. This was from the perspective of how important it is to make sure that KGV is a safe space and we wanted to provide clarity so that students can keep themselves and others safe.
You can see a summary of the key points here.
Wishing you a great long weekend.
This week was the first of our biannually administered KGV Student Wellbeing Survey. Our Student Development Team is looking carefully at the data to help us prioritise your child's wellbeing needs and cultivate a positive learning environment for all students.
Next Wednesday is the first of the Year 8 Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) days with the English and Science department. The subject of the IDU is Environmental Activism: Bringing a Sustainable Change to KGV. In the IDU, students will identify an area of improvement within KGV linked to a particular UN SDG. Over the coming weeks, they will use their knowledge of sustainability from Science and persuasive language from English to produce a 5-minute presentation to a judging panel.
We will have a Year 8/9 assembly in the Hall on Thursday during tutor time. In this assembly, we will share more of what we can do to make KGV a positive community and present our ESF Substance Misuse Policy and prohibited items list. Hence, all students will know the policy and our school expectations, guidelines and procedures.
We have a small number of students who are losing their belongings during the day. Please check that all your child's belongings are named to promote accountability, organisation, independence, respect for property, and a sense of ownership. Teaching your child to care for their belongings teaches them organisation and respect, habits essential for their growth and development and preparation for their future responsibilities.
MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) Focus for our Parent Newsletter: Social Skills. My Team - Trust
Success at school relies significantly on your child's social skills to develop a trustworthy team.
Your child has people around them who all contribute to their success.
Your Child's Team is made up of:
Their family
Their friends
Their teachers
And THEMSELVES!
Please encourage them to share problems with their team when they encounter issues or wish to test their knowledge. Remind them their team wants to support them and help them create success for themself. Encourage them to listen to and respect their team’s opinions, even if they differ from their own.
Successful teams are prepared to work hard to achieve their goals collaboratively and should have confidence in each other.
At times, your child may mistake their team's advice for criticism. Please encourage your child to listen to their team's feedback and consider it before deciding it is wrong. Remind them their team wants to see them do their best.
Building a trustworthy team will help your child feel supported and they will benefit from their team's input.
Ask your child to think of ways they may approach their team when they:
Need help
Want to ask a question
Have an idea
Remind them that sometimes making the first move is often the hardest.
Additional Actions for Parents:
Ask your child what two things they will start doing to improve their relationship with their team - trust?
We wish you and your family a happy Mid-Autumn Festival. 中秋節快樂

Student Wellbeing Survey
Twice a year, we conduct a student wellbeing survey; the first of these took place this week. The survey includes various questions on topics such as friendships, how students are coping with school, quality of sleep and whether they feel cared for by teachers. Further details can be found in this video: https://youtu.be/W4zns5YUh84
Students’ responses will be followed up at school in the coming weeks by conversing with their tutor or a nominated staff member. The various student support teams (such as Heads of Year, School Counsellors, etc.) will provide additional support if needed. Results are not shared with parents/guardians as a matter of course, but we would encourage you to take this opportunity to engage with your child about the survey and their wellbeing in general.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Amanda Barton (Wellbeing Coordinator). We’d also encourage you to contact your child’s tutor anytime with concerns or information you’d like to share with us about your child’s wellbeing.

The Canadian Senior and Intermediate Mathematics Contests (CSMC and CIMC) are two contests designed to give students the opportunity to have fun and develop their mathematical problem-solving ability – past papers are available here: https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/past_contests.html#csimc
Students in Years 13 or 12 are eligible to write the CSMC, and students intending to apply to the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics are especially recommended to enter.
Students in Years 11 or 10 or below are eligible to write the CIMC. Students in Years 7 – 9 should look through the past papers linked above before deciding whether to enter this specific contest, or wait for the contests targeted at their year group (these take place in Terms 2 and 3, and sign-up will open closer to the competition date).
The CSMC and CIMC will take place on Thursday, 16th November, and runs for two hours –more about the format of the competition is available here: https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/csimc.html
The entry fee is around $100, depending on the currency exchange rate, which parents will be invoiced for through our school’s ePayment system.
If your child wishes to sign up, please have them fill in the google form posted in the Student Bulletin by the deadline of Friday, 6th October – note that they will need to be logged into their school account to access this.
To prepare for the contest, they may wish to join our SL Senior Competitive Maths Club on Friday lunchtimes– signup is through the usual LIONeL CAS system, and they are welcome to come to a “taster” session beforehand. And please encourage them to keep an eye on the Student Bulletin for other maths competitions, such as the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competition (AMC), coming soon!
