Interim Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our outstanding facilities team for their work in securing the KGV site during the typhoon on Monday. They ensured we were ready for the students to return the following day, and their dedication is very much appreciated. Let’s hope that was the last weather interruption for a while.
It was also a pleasure to welcome a group of Sha Tin College students to KGV on Wednesday. Their visit provided a great opportunity for our Inclusion and Equity group to share their successes and future plans, whilst taking a step forward in building a collaborative approach across ESF. A wonderful example of the power of student leadership and a testimony to why we should be proud of our remarkable students.
As we move towards the mid-term break, we have an action packed week ahead. The annual Hebe Haven sailing event happens this weekend. Good luck to the students involved and a big thank you to the support of KGV staff and parents in making this happen. The Inter-house cross country races next week will bring a buzz of excitement, as will the final preparations for Challenge Week. I recognise the collective commitment and expertise of our staff provides so many opportunities for the students, and is one of the many factors that makes KGV such a special place.
Interim reports will be released next Friday. They are an early indication of how your child is settling into classes in terms of their attitude to learning and their organisational skills.
Thank you for your ongoing support and have a wonderful weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Interim Principal
Year 12 & 13 Message
Our KGV Challenge Week this year takes place from Monday 30th October to Friday 3rd November.
Year 12 students have signed up and are looking forward to an exciting week and a variety of enriching experiences.
For Year 13 students, this year the week will consist of academic intervention supports for those students that are most in need. The option is available for BTEC self-determined work experience or students can choose to catch up on Units of Work on campus. Our BTEC Business students will undertake Event Management planning for our KGV Year 7 Camp. IBDP students will be undertaking a mandatory Group 4 Project day. Life-Skills workshops will be delivered by external professionals on Thursday 2nd November and our Year 13 Trip to Ocean Park / Disneyland will take place on Tuesday 31st October.
If a student requires an appointment with their HE Counsellor, our HE team are available all week and we encourage students to email their counsellor as soon as possible to book in a meeting.
If you have a request in connection with a prior commitment or alternative arrangement regarding your son /daughter, please notify our Senior Head of Year, Mr Pritchard, or myself.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week a few of the Year 7 Challenge Week leaders visited the campsites we will be using. They are both lovely places for the students to spend a night under canvas! Students will be split across campsites as follows;
C1, N1, R1, U1: Tuesday night at Chung Pui Campsite
C2, N2, R2, U2: Tuesday night at Hok Tau Campsite
C3, N3, R3, U3: Thursday night at Hok Tau Campsite
C4, N4, R4, U4: Thursday night at Chung Pui Campsite.
After visiting the campsites, we do not believe that the students will need to bring swimwear. They might still want to bring flip-flops to wear in the toilets and/or showers (please note that there are public showers only at Hok Tau campsite).
Year 7 Students will meet some of the staff working for our external provider, Higher Ground, during next week's Challenge Week meeting.
On Friday, 20 October, KGV Interim Reports will go live. The purpose of the Interim Reports is to provide feedback on student engagement and learning to parents and tutors early in the year.
Your child may talk to you about their subject assessments during the term. Once subject assessments are complete, marked and moderated by teachers across the subject departments, your child's assessment data will be available on Lionel CCF. This can take up to two weeks. You will receive a notification email once your child's grades are uploaded. Regularly checking the CCF for new data is optional, as it will alert you. Just so you know, the First Semester Reports, a complete summary of the Semester One Assessments, will be available on 9 February 2024.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 7 Team
It is the time of year when your child may talk to you about their subject assessments. Once subject assessments are complete, marked and moderated by teachers across the subject departments, your child's assessment data will be available on Lionel CCF. This process can take up to two weeks. You will receive a notification email once your child's grades are uploaded. Regularly checking the CCF for new data is optional, as it will alert you.

Just so you know, the First Semester Reports, a complete summary of the Semester One Assessments, will be available on 9 February.
Next week will be a productive one before the half-term break. During tutor time, there will be Challenge Week meetings and a Year 8 and 9 Assembly in the Hall.
The Year 8 & 9 Tutor classes continue to enjoy the Tutor Time Games during tutor time and had the opportunity to swap their games for new ones this week. The Year 8 and 9 students enjoy this opportunity to have a dose of healthy competitiveness while building their relationships and sense of belonging to their tutor group.
MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) Focus for our Parent Newsletter: Social Skills. Friends.
Your child having a good close group of friends as part of their team is a real benefit because they can:
Help each other to create success
Celebrate good times together
Discuss problems and issues and suggest strategies to overcome them
Support and encourage each other when things don't go well
Keep each other focused while studying together
Exercise and relax together
A true friend will accept and respect your child as they are. They will like them for them and always want the best for them.
When your child meets new people, please encourage them to be themselves. Putting on a false image might impress someone at first, but they will see through it, and eventually, your child will become exhausted putting on the ‘act’. Please remind your child that friendships must begin with people getting to know the real them.
Share with your child that the Golden Rule of interacting with people is treating others how you like to be treated.
Promoting pretend images shows your child is unhappy with themselves and perhaps lacks confidence. Remind them they are a person of worth. One of the first steps to your child making new friends is their happiness with who they are.
Encouraging your child to spend time with friends away from school will enable them to relax, share ideas and learn new things.
Additional Actions for Parents:
Ask your child what two things they will do to improve their relationships with friends.
Have a great weekend.

In assembly this week, students met our interim Principal Mr Mark Poulsum, they were briefed about setting goals for Challenge Week and also reminded of our high expectations of behaviour. They were encouraged to participate in choosing our future school charities and we farewelled Braddock who is off to Queensland.
Year 11 students have received information about their year 12 options and "preliminary" option choices are now open. Students need to indicate what pathway and subjects they would like to study by next Friday 20th October. This preliminary choice doesn't tie them to this decision, it is to give us an indication so that we can anticipate staffing and timetable issues and to get students thinking seriously about their academic trajectory. More information regarding the subjects can be found on the Lionel options page along with a video of how the options process works.
