Interim Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
On Thursday evening we enjoyed one of KGV’s key annual events, our 99th Speech Night. This was a fitting opportunity to celebrate such a wide range of remarkable achievements by our students, reflecting the excellence evident throughout the KGV community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organising team, led by Carole Beer, in putting together this extraordinary event.
Alongside recognising such remarkable achievements, our aim is to ensure that all students are making progress in their learning all the time. A key part of this work is building strong home-school partnerships as we support our young people in their learning journey. With this in mind, we have our first Learning Review day on Friday 24th November. This is an opportunity to discuss progress made so far, identify meaningful targets from feedback and consider how to act on these targets. I am sure you will find these meetings productive and insightful, and we appreciate your time in participating in this and future learning reviews.
We also have a number of key events coming up, ranging from Evening of Music and Dance, to Elf and the Winter Fair. Please look out for further information in the coming weeks as we look to end this term with a real buzz of excitement.
Have a wonderful weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Interim Principal
Congratulations to all of our award winners in last night’s 99th celebration of our students successes, KGV Speech Night!
It was a tremendous week of celebration for lots of our senior students with the awarding of KGV Colours in our assemblies this week.
Our students continue to impress and achieve in all that they do and our Senior School team are incredibly proud of all our students’ efforts to make our school the best it can be.
A reminder that the first of our KGV Learning Review Days occurs next Friday 24th November. These meetings take place online and there are no timetabled lessons for our students on this day.
Wishing you a great weekend.
This week we have celebrated student effort, commitment and success through the colours awards during the day and our 99th Speech night last night where we awarded a range of prizes and were entertained by the choir, orchestra and student media.
A reminder that we are in winter uniform now, please ensure your child brings their tie and is dressed warmly in school uniform.
Learning reviews are coming up and all three days will be open for booking at 6pm on Monday.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Today we held a wonderful Pride Week Concert for all students, celebrating individuality and acceptance for all. It was lovely to see our staff and students supporting our LGBTQ+ community. A great way to end the week. Thank you to our KGV GSA Group for organising.
Last night we held our 99th KGV Speech Night where we recognised some of our most accomplished students. Year 7 students will be part of next year's Speech Night.
Learning Review appointments opened to Year 7 parents yesterday. I see from the WhatsApp chat that many subjects are already fully booked. Year 11 and 13 parents were given priority this week. I will let you know soon when the bookings are available for 5th December. The first Learning Review takes place on 24th November. This means students will work at home next Friday, on work set by teachers, whilst teachers meet online with parents. More information will be sent next week about accessing codes to meet teachers.
Tickets for our KGV Christmas Musical "Elf" go on sale on Tuesday next week. Our Drama and music departments always produce excellent shows. I fully recommend you buy tickets and come along.
Have a good weekend.
The Year 7 Team
With the welcome drop in temperature, students have enjoyed being outside between classes and at break times and wearing the winter uniform with pride.
Last night, we celebrated KGV’s 99th Annual Speech Night. It was an opportunity for us to come together and recognise the fantastic achievements of our remarkable students. The diversity of achievements demonstrated how our students have risen to the challenge of being the best they can be. From our current Year 8 & 9 cohort, we would like to congratulate the following students who received awards:
Ezra Abraham Scholarship for Attainment: Even Chan, 8C10
Ezra Abraham Scholarship for Attainment: Hailey Sit, 9C08
Ezra Abraham Scholarship for Progress: Kingsley Wong, 8R12
Ezra Abraham Scholarship for Progress: Maya Chu, 9N07
A reminder that Interim Report Data has been available for three weeks and that the first Learning Review is next Friday (November 24th). Students are not to come to school for regular lessons on this day. Please review your child's Interim Report and book any subject appointments through the ESF App. All three days will be open for booking at 6 pm on Monday 20 Nov. Please invite your child to join you during the learning reviews so they can receive valuable feedback directly from their teachers.
Year 8 students have presented the IDUs to a panel of judges of senior leaders, teachers, support staff and senior students. The students combined their learning from Science and English to produce a compelling 5-minute business pitch for their sustainable development products. The buzz and joy seen around the school over the past few weeks, including the 2 IDU ideation days, was a testament to the hard work they have put into enriching the learning of the Y8 cohort - a truly remarkable experience for our Y8 students.
MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) Focus for our Parent Newsletter: Self Management. Anger Control.
Helping your child to develop strategies that allow them to control their emotions will assist in them successfully navigating the ups and downs in life.
The key is for your child to be aware of what makes them angry and their body's signals when they become angry.
Firstly, being angry at times is a perfectly normal part of life. It is how your child controls their anger that is important.
There are two types of anger:
controlled - you use your anger to get pumped up; you are confident and assertive
uncontrolled - your logic and thinking are not level; you become impulsive and make poor choices.
Your child needs to know their warning signals to develop anger control strategies. These are the ways their body communicates to them that they are angry.
They could be:
Feeling hot
Muscle tension
Violent thoughts
Ask your child to draw an outline of their body and write the signals on it; number the signals in the order they usually happen. This will help them to understand how their anger builds up.
Always get your child to reflect on their actions; consider what they have done before speaking out or acting:
they can ask themselves, “Is this my problem?”
if it isn’t, ignore it
if it is, seek helpful advice from your Team to solve it
Additional Actions for Parents:
Ask your child what two things they will start doing to work on their anger control.
Have a great weekend.

KGV 99th Speech Night
Yesterday evening the school community came together to recognize and celebrate many of our most accomplished students from 2022-2023. It was a wonderful evening as over 90 students came on stage to receive prizes for their academic, sporting, cultural and service successes. We were joined by Hector Poon (Chair of KGV School Council), Mark Blackshaw (ESF Director of Education) and our Guest of Honour Ben Leatham, who spoke so eloquently about his mental health journey and his commitment to mental health provision. Please see our order of service and an overview of prize winners in the file attached below.
Next year is our 100th Speech Night! Plans are already well underway for what promises to be a memorable occasion. We would love to hear your stories, see your photos and collect your memories of previous KGV Speech Nights. Please click here or use the QR code below, to share your memories with us.
