Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I hope you have enjoyed a good week, despite the first rainstorm warning of the year.
Today is the last day before Year 11 students start their study leave in preparation for (I)GCSE examinations. We know they have been working hard to get ready for this key milestone in their learning, and I would like to thank all teachers for ensuring that they are fully prepared for the weeks ahead.
Next week, we will be engaging KGV teachers with how we can use AI to support the students in their learning. The rapid emergence of these new technologies provides both an opportunity and a challenge within education. It is vital that we embrace such tools to support and enable the learning experiences of all students. This will ensure they develop the skills needed to thrive in the future, whilst also being mindful of using these technologies in a way that upholds our commitment to academic integrity and the KGV values.
Have a great weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Year 12 & 13 Message
In our Year 12 assembly this week, we highlighted the IB Term 3 Assessment Week, beginning 3 June. We also emphasised the need to support and respect our LRC space and staff in ensuring this area is dedicated to supporting study & independent learning.
Please see below the Year 13 Graduation E-invite communicated to all Year 13 parents this week.
We are delighted to invite you to the Class of 2024 Graduation Ceremony marking the completion of your son/daughter’s education at KGV. During this formal event, all students will be presented with their Certificate of Graduation.
The formal ceremony begins at 6.00 pm in the KGV School Hall on Thursday, 30 May 2024. The ceremony is planned to last for approximately 90 minutes.
There is seating in the hall for a maximum of 2 guests per student. Each student will be given two tickets; you will require these to gain entry to the hall.
Thank you, and we look forward to seeing everyone on 30 May.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week in assembly, we were treated to an amazing performance by Tara Li and Rithika Immedisetty who beautifully sang "In the Stars". We were so proud of them, their courage and musical prowess.
Students today were given words to learn for our Year 7 Spelling Bee. This annual event starts within tutor groups and runs, in conjunction with the English Department, through Term 3 as we find our Year 7 Champion. It is always a highlight of the Year 7 calendar.
Have a great weekend.
The Year 7 Team
Year 11 are on study leave so our full attention turns to Year 10. Tutors will be sitting down with Year 10 students to conduct one to one conversations over the next weeks.
There are opportunities to get involved with things like TEDx KGV and to contribute to the KGV 130th anniversary.

All instructions and procedures for exams
Please look out for any signs of undue anxiety and encourage breaks, exercise, sleep and healthy food. Get in touch if we can help you.
We have had a productive return to school CAS activities this week. Check-in with your child to see what CAS activities they are involved in and if they have a wide range of weekly activities here. Participating in CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) activities at school offers students many benefits. Firstly, it encourages creativity and self-expression through various artistic endeavours, fostering personal growth and a sense of accomplishment. Secondly, engaging in physical activities promotes a healthy lifestyle, improves physical fitness, and enhances teamwork and sportsmanship. Additionally, service activities cultivate empathy, compassion, and social responsibility, allowing students to impact their communities positively. CAS also helps develop essential skills such as time management, leadership, and problem-solving.
In early May, Year 8’s will be confirming their Language choices for the next year and making their Arts choices. This will all be completed on Lionel. More information will follow.
MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) Focus for our Parent Newsletter: Cultural Awareness
Cultural awareness is vital in our diverse world. As part of the MYP, we prioritise promoting cultural understanding. It encompasses knowledge, appreciation, and respect for different cultures. Our curriculum integrates cultural awareness through global contexts, language acquisition, service learning, and international mindedness. Nurturing cultural awareness equips students to thrive in a multicultural world and develop essential life skills. Let's celebrate diversity, encourage dialogue, and create an inclusive environment.
Parents play a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness in the MYP. Here are some actions you can take to support your child's cultural development:
Encourage Cultural Exploration: Encourage your child to explore different cultures through books, films, music, and art. Expose them to diverse cultural experiences within your local community and globally.
Celebrate Family Heritage: Share your family's cultural traditions, customs, and stories with your child. Engage them in activities celebrating their cultural heritage and help them develop a sense of pride in their background.
Foster Open-Mindedness: Teach your child the value of respecting and appreciating different cultures. Please encourage them to ask questions, challenge stereotypes, and embrace diverse perspectives.
Support Language Learning: Encourage your child to learn a second language or maintain their heritage language. Language learning promotes cultural understanding and opens doors to new cultures and communication.
Engage in Community Events: Attend cultural festivals, exhibitions, and community events that showcase different cultures. This provides opportunities for your child to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and learn about their traditions.
Encourage Global Connections: Foster connections with individuals or families from different cultural backgrounds. Encourage your child to engage in cross-cultural friendships and activities, promoting understanding and appreciation of diversity.
Embrace Cultural Exchange: Explore opportunities for cultural exchange programs. This allows your child to interact with students from different cultures, fostering cultural understanding and empathy.
Discuss Current Events: Engage your child in conversations about global issues and current events. Please encourage them to think critically, consider different perspectives, and develop a nuanced understanding of cultural, social, and political issues.
Support MYP Initiatives: Stay informed about the MYP curriculum and initiatives related to cultural awareness. Attend school events, parent-teacher conferences, and information sessions to promote cultural understanding within the MYP.
Lead by Example: Demonstrate respect for diversity in your actions and interactions. Model inclusive behaviours, challenge biases, and promote understanding and empathy within your family and community.
By actively promoting cultural awareness at home, you can complement the efforts of the MYP and help your child develop a global perspective, empathy, and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity.
Thank you for your continued partnership. We appreciate your ongoing support and cooperation in your child's education.
Have a great weekend.

Year 9 Community Project Update:
Today was follow-up day 4 for the students in the Community Project. They focused on:
Final steps - Planning for Action
Logistics – dates, times, how, what, with who?
Planning a contingency – what will you do if the plan fails?
Looking ahead at the assessment – understanding what the endpoint looks like
Please check in with your child and ask them to share their progress on their Community Project.
Year 9 and Laptops:
In the assembly yesterday, Mr Glover spoke to Year 9 students about being able to bring their laptops to school from June onwards. There is no requirement to change laptops; if your child’s current one is fine, then the recommendation is that they continue using it. Mr Glover went through the issues involved in using a laptop that is not part of the school program, and he will share more information with students and parents soon.
Year 9 Maths and Science Updates:
Maths and Science are in the process of making recommendations regarding pathways for IGCSE. This information will be shared with students and parents in early May alongside an online information session for parents. Teachers will also explain the process to students in Maths and Science lessons.

School reference (non-higher education purposes) (Link to policy on Lionel)
The KGV Careers Office coordinates all our student references including exit & summer schools.
For students’ privacy, parents must give KGV their permission to release their child’s reference to a specific list of schools they are applying to. KGV only liaise directly with those schools with parents' permission.
To facilitate a smooth reference process, parents are suggested to contact the Careers Office (careers.office@kgv.edu.hk) with a list of institutions and names of teachers nominated to write references. Please allow at least 4-6 working weeks for teachers to work on school references. School references for higher education applications are done in a separate process.
If students are pursuing gifted and talented programmes outside of KGV, they should contact Mr. Krishin Hotwani directly.

Parents’ Support for KGV Careers Fair and Careers Exposure
The Careers Office organises various opportunities for our students to explore careers options. The annual September Careers Fair and various work experiences are some of them. These could not have happened without our wonderful parent’s support. We are hoping to introduce more opportunities for our students.
For parents who would like to collaborate with KGV, please take two minutes to complete this form here. Our team will get in touch with you to discuss further the opportunities that you may bring to community.
We truly appreciate your support. Thank you!
Year 13
- IBO Result Service. It is a service provided by IB to send final results directly to the institution(s) students have chosen. Students are briefed about the procedures. Students have until 24 May 2024 to complete the request coordinated by the KGV Exam Office. It is necessary for IB students to sign up to this service so that their final IB results will be delivered directly by IBO to the higher institutions as soon as results are released. This ensures no delay in securing offers.
- Exit presentation for parents on 2 May, 6.00 pm. We presented to students various procedures highlighting important action points in preparation for their post-KGV paths. We believe parents should be informed, too. Please mark your calendar for 6.00 pm on 2 May, Thursday. A Zoom link will be sent to all Year 13 parents before that.
- Universities have started sending out offers. Students are most welcome to chat with their HE Counsellors any time.
- If students plan to take a gap year or apply to Australia after graduation, we would appreciate it if they can inform their HE Counsellors about their plans so that we can support them when it’s time for them to make their applications.
Best wishes to our IB students with their upcoming exams, and to our BTEC students in mastering remainder of their coursework.
Year 12

KGV Careers & H.E. Team
On Thursday 11th April, The Hong Kong Sports Institute held the Shine Tak Foundation Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards Annual Celebration. The awards give recognition to local junior talented athletes who achieve outstanding sporting achievement. KGV had three students receiving awards for their achievement in their sport. Fritz Mahn and Liam Jordan received awards for their performances with the Hong Kong U18 rugby team who placed 2nd at the Asia Games. Ethan Su received a certificate of appreciation for his performance and achievement in Kendo. These awards are hard earned and recognise only the top performing athletes at the HKSI. So a huge congratulations to these three boys for their achievements!
EQUESTRIAN
This year was the return of a KGV equestrian team. It has been a few years since a team has been put together and we had a good number of riders competing through the heats.
The KGV A team, consisting of Timothy Ngai, Suie Tanaka, and Theo Lai recently competed in the HK Schools Equestrian finals. Day 1 involved dressage with all riders performing well on the day, but we were in 4th place at the end of the day. Saturday involved the showjumping and the team put in great performances and finished the competition in 1st place overall! This was a massive achievement for the team who only started competing for KGV together this year. Final results had Timothy placing 1st in both dressage and showjumping and Suie placing 5th for showjumping.
The team were extremely proud of their achievements as they should be and they will be looking to put up a strong challenge as they move to higher division next year. Well done to the team and the whole KGV equestrian team for their achievements over the season.
BADMINTON
A big congratulations to our C Grade badminton team who won the ISSFHK league competition. The boys have been a very strong team this year and went through pool play unbeaten in 6 games. What is even more impressive is over these 6 games they only lost one set. They then went on to win the semi final 5-0 and the final 3-1. Their final games for and against record was an amazing 26 - 2. This shows the complete dominance by this team.
Well done to Divyam Gupta, Param Mehta, Raghav Khatuwala, Anay Shah, Aaryan Shah, Phoenix Chan, Divyansh Jain and Ken Liu.
