Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I hope you have enjoyed a good week and were able to spend time with your families to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. At KGV, we recognise the vital role that parents play in supporting their child’s education. We aim to ensure there are strong home-school partnerships and parents are engaged with their child’s learning.
To support this home-school partnership, we are developing our parent engagement and education programme for our community. This will include:
Curriculum based workshops for MYP, IGCSE, DP and IBCP/BTEC. These will be interactive and give you insights into what your child learns, what assessment looks like and how you can support at home.
A wellbeing programme that will include cybersafety and parenting teenagers.
Workshops that will engage parents with the KGV strategic priorities whilst also seeking feedback on your child’s experience at school.
Michelle Tsang, who oversees Parent Engagement, will be sharing further details and how to sign up. Please look out for more information through the ESF App.
We value your support and engagement, and look forward to seeing you at these sessions in the coming weeks and months.
Have a wonderful weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark
Year 12 & 13 Message
We hope that everyone enjoyed the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Student wellbeing Surveys.
Every year students at KGV complete a wellbeing survey at the start of the academic year. All students have been directly emailed with the link (it’s a google form) and have been invited to complete the survey by Tues 24th Sept 5pm. You can watch this short video to learn more about the survey. It should take around 20 mins and students will be given time to do this during tutor time (but can do it in their own time if they prefer). Student responses are not anonymous and will form the basis of an informal conversation they have with their tutor, or nominated staff member, over the next few weeks. We encourage students to answer honestly so they thoughtfully reflect on areas of their personal wellbeing, so the school can support those who need it and so we can gain a true insight into the overall experience of students at KGV.
[If you have any questions, please contact your child’s tutor or Amanda Barton]
Wishing you a great weekend.
Year 10 & 11 Message
I've just come from supervising the Year 10 Yellis test for half of our Y10 students. We have a few students to chase up due to absences and will get the results shared to families as soon after that as we can.
This week our students were directly emailed with a link to the KGV Wellbeing survey (it’s a google form) and have been invited to complete the survey by Tues 24th Sept 5pm. You can watch this short video to learn more about the survey. It should take around 20 mins and students will be given time to do this during tutor time (but can do it in their own time if they prefer). Next Tuesday our assembly will be about Deepfakes and their potential to cause harm. This is a modern issue where AI allows anyone to easily create fake images, videos and audio that can be harmful , indecent and may break the law. Our assembly aims to educate students and help them consider consequences to avoid harming themselves and others. Please ask your child about their takeaways following Tuesday's assembly.
For students in Yera 10 and 11 that take a school bus, we will hold another assembly on Friday to talk about appropriate behaviour and keeping themselves and each other safe.
Year 8 Message
School photos have been distributed to students. Orders can be placed online or returned to school. Any forms should be submitted at the reception.
As part of KGV's commitment to preventative child protection and safeguarding education, we shared a presentation on 'AI and Deepfakes' during our assembly this week. A deepfake is a manipulated video or image that replaces one person's likeness with another, making it difficult to discern its authenticity.
Initially created for fun or film, the technology is now easily accessible, leading to misuse, such as fake advertisements and inappropriate images created by people of all ages involving adults and children.
In Hong Kong, creating or sharing indecent or inappropriate images of individuals, real or computer generated, is a criminal offence, punishable by law. The age of criminal responsibility is set at 10.
If someone is affected by a deepfake, they can seek support from trusted adults at school, such as their tutor or Head of Year, and report the incident to authorities, as the harm caused is comparable to real events. Resources like Ta-DA can assist in removing such material online https://rainlily.org.hk/ibsv/tada.
Each year, KGV students participate in a Student Wellbeing Survey at the beginning of the academic year. All students have received an email with a link to the survey (hosted on Google Forms) and are invited to complete it by Tuesday, September 24, at 5 PM.
To learn more about the survey, you can watch the short video here. It should take approximately 20 minutes to complete, and students will have time during tutor time to do so; however, they can also choose to complete it at their convenience.
Please note that student responses are not anonymous and will inform informal conversations with their tutor or a designated staff member in the coming weeks. We encourage students to answer honestly, as this reflection will help us support those in need and gain valuable insights into the overall student experience at KGV.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s tutor or Amanda Barton.
Next Wednesday, there will be a bus assembly during tutor time for students who use the school buses. This assembly will focus on appropriate and safe behaviours while riding the bus. We will inform the students directly about the assembly details and share the content of the assembly with parents in next weeks newsletter.
Have a great weekend.
