Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
One of our themes since the start of the academic year has been developing belonging to the KGV Community. The engagement of our parent community is key to this, and it was wonderful to see so many parents sharing their expertise and professional background at the KGV Careers Fair. The vibrancy of our PTSA Committee also reflects this strong sense of belonging, and a big thank you to all involved in developing the PTSA projects for this year.
In the 130th year of KGV, we are continuing to build the stories of KGV past, present and future. These stories will be captured in a new website that will celebrate those who have belonged to our community since the school opened in 1894. Look out for this website being launched very soon, alongside further information of our upcoming celebrations.
Thank you for your ongoing support and have a great weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Principal
Year 7 Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I have spent a lot of time this week visiting Year 7 classrooms and have experienced a wonderful range of teaching and learning opportunities. Our students are engaged, motivated and learning at high levels across all subjects.
Next week we will be sending home Year 7 MIDYIS results. The results will come home via your child. We will also send explanatory notes to help parents understand the data, as well as provide strategies for parents to use at home to support in learning outside of school. These results will be distributed on Thursday, so please check with your child.
Next Friday we will have the first of our House Spirit Days. This is a non-school uniform day, with students asked to wear clothes in their House colours e.g. Upsdell students would wear red. There is a HK$20 donation asked of each student which will go towards School Charities. Crozier and Nightingale students will also be raising money through tutor time activities.
A reminder that next Tuesday is a Public Holiday.
Have a lovely weekend.
Year 12 & 13 Message
As part of KGV's commitment to preventative child protection and safeguarding education, we shared a presentation on AI and Deepfakes during our assembly this week. A deepfake is a manipulated video or image that replaces one person's likeness with another, making it difficult to discern its authenticity.
Initially created for fun or film, the technology is now easily accessible, leading to misuse, such as fake advertisements and inappropriate images created by people of all ages involving adults and children.
In Hong Kong, creating or sharing indecent or inappropriate images of individuals, real or computer generated, is a criminal offence, punishable by law, and the age of criminal responsibility is set at 10.
If someone is affected by a deepfake, they can seek support from trusted adults at school, such as their tutor or Head of Year, and report the incident to authorities, as the harm caused is comparable to real events. Resources like Ta-DA can assist in removing such material online https://rainlily.org.hk/ibsv/tada.
Wishing you a great weekend.
As part of KGV's commitment to preventative child protection and safeguarding education, we shared a presentation on AI and Deepfakes during our assembly on Tuesday. This was followed the next day by a discussion during tutor time. Please talk to your child about what they took away from that assembly presentation and the subsequent discussion during tutor time.

Year 8 & 9 Message
We are thrilled to see our students enjoying themselves during the Year 8 & 9 Paper Plane Tutor Time Interhouse Competition! Some planes are soaring gracefully, flying far and wide, while others take unexpected dives, making for a delightful mix of outcomes. This friendly competition showcases our student's creativity and engineering skills and emphasises teamwork and perseverance. It is a joy to witness the laughter and excitement as students cheer for each other, celebrating the impressive flights and the playful attempts. Finals take place next week - weather permitting.
Please remind your child that they must be wearing their shoes when they are on the school field (or any other place around the school). If they are not wearing shoes, this is a health and safety issue, and the staff member on duty will remind them to put them on.
Also, this is a reminder about our uniform regarding school shoes and safety - boots, canvas, mesh, Mary Jane and ballet styles are not permitted. Closed-toe leather shoes that fully enclose the feet provide better protection for students' feet, especially in environments with potential hazards such as sharp objects, heavy equipment, or chemicals that may be present in specific classrooms or laboratories. Shoes which fully enclose the foot help prevent injuries and accidents.
Please see our uniform guidelines here: https://www.kgv.edu.hk/uniform/
In summary:
● Shoes must be black polishable leather.
● The upper must fully enclose the foot.
● Boots, canvas, Mary Jane, and ballet styles are prohibited.
● There should be no rubberised toe to the shoe, and the shoes must be completely black (no other colours on the shoe).
Next Friday, we will have the first of our House Spirit Days, a non-school uniform day, with students asked to wear clothes in their House colours e.g. Upsdell students would wear red. A donation of HK$20 per student will go towards school charities. Crozier and Nightingale students will also be raising money through tutor time activities. Odd Socks Day is also on Friday 4th Oct. The Wellbeing Prefects have made this presentation to share with our community Odd Socks Day - 2024 presentation for community .
A reminder that next Tuesday is a Public Holiday.
Have a lovely weekend.
Interim reports will be issued on Friday, October 18th. These are an early indication of your child's organisation and engagement with learning across all their subjects this year. It may act as an early warning for any issues or to reassure that everything is on track.
Challenge Week
About 700 KGV students are heading outside Hong Kong for Challenge Week, and it was great to see so many parents engaging with our staff last night in the online trip briefings. The presentations used and all other logistics and trip information is stored on the page for each trip in the Challenge Week website here.
For the other 1200 students engaged in local activities, information is also available on the page for each trip and will be finalised over the next few weeks.
This week, Mr Poulsom held bus assemblies during tutor time for students who use the KGV school buses.
These assemblies focused on appropriate and safe behaviours while riding the school bus.
Attached is a copy of the content shared with students.
While these buses are not operated by KGV School or KGV PTSA, and all parents are requested to handle inquiries directly with the bus operators, KGV actively collaborates with bus companies and parents to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of students during their journeys to and from school.
School reference (non-higher education purposes)
The KGV Careers Office coordinates all our student references including exit & summer schools.
For students’ privacy, parental permission is required before KGV can release the school reference for your child. KGV will only proceed with requests once parental permission has been received.
To request a school reference, parents are kindly asked to complete this form. Please allow at least four working weeks for teachers to prepare the references.
School references for higher education applications are managed in a separate process.
If students are pursuing gifted and talented programmes outside of KGV, they should contact Mr. Krishin Hotwani directly.
