Principal's Message
Dear KGV Families,
Each student I have spoken to this week has enjoyed an amazing experience, whatever they have been doing. They have appreciated trying something different, engaging in activities they are passionate about and have gained so much from Challenge Week. An important aspect of their education.
As these activities come to a close, I would encourage all students to reflect on their experiences. They could consider how effectively they have collaborated with others, whether they have demonstrated resilience when overcoming challenges, and how they have creatively solved problems.
This reflective process is a key part of each child’s educational journey. Another opportunity to reflect are the Learning Reviews, starting for Y7,8,9,10 and Y12 on Friday 15th November. This provides the opportunity for you to gain insights to your child’s progress. These conversations will focus on what is going well, areas for development and next steps in learning. Please be reminded that all students will remain at home on Friday 15th November, and they are likely to have home learning activities to complete on that day.
I hope you enjoy reflecting on Challenge Week at home, and have a wonderful weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Principal

Year 8 & 9 Message
I've spent Challenge Week with 71 Year 8 and 9 students and have been reflecting on the importance of experiential learning for a young person's growth. I’ve witnessed new friendships forming, skills being developed, curiosity and kindness blossoming, and newfound independence and responsibility taking shape. The flexibility, adaptability, wonder, and excitement I've seen have been truly inspiring.
While supervising students on local or overseas trips can be demanding, watching them thrive outside the classroom is a privilege. Thank you to all our KGV teachers for guiding students near and far during this year's Challenge Week! I also want to thank you, the parents, for your support and encouragement, which makes these experiences possible. We hope your child cherishes these memories for years to come.

Challenge Week
Students and staff have thrown themselves into their chosen activities this week. I have seen incredible products, creativity, teamwork, service, connection and friendship.
We are welcoming our trips from outside Hong Kong back at the train station and airport over the next few days.
We have not run a live blog of photos this year as we feel that things have changed regarding privacy and sharing of images. On Thursday next week, students will meet again as Challenge Week groups and will have a chance to share media and images with the staff and each other. Your child will be able to show you the highlights from their activity.
Thank you to all parents for their support of Challenge Week as it brings human connection, varied experiences and important skills that we can't always focus on in the classroom.

Students will not attend school on the two full days of Learning reviews.
Learning reviews are an opportunity to discuss academic progress with your child’s teachers at KGV.
Learning Reviews involve all subject teachers and all students. In 2024 we are planning for these to take place for students in Y7,8,9,10,12 on:
And for students in Y11 and 13 following the mock exams.
Bookings are made in Lionel through the ESF App. The system opens at 6pm this Friday evening.
Parents can make bookings across any of the three days. The appointment booking system will close 48 hours before each Learning Review to give staff time to plan and prepare. It will then reopen at the end of each Learning Review so you can book or change appointments for the days still to come.
We have 10 minute and 5 minute slots available. Choose a 5 minute slot unless there are deeper issues you wish to discuss. Slots cannot be booked back to back.
Appointments must finish sharply at the end of the time slot so teachers can welcome the next family. Please ensure you are on time to start your appointment.
Appointments take place online through Google meet. Parents and students can join from separate devices.
We recommend that your child attends the meeting to help with the discussion.
A full guide for making bookings and using Google meet is here.
We would like to extend our big congratulations to the following teams for their amazing success in their respective competitions.
Swimming
Well done to the swim team on a very successful HKSSF meet. The A grade boys swam very well and finished in second place. The B grade girls team won their respective division and the C grade girls team placed second. This resulted in our Girls Swim Team coming second overall and earning promotion to Division 1. A fantastic result for this young team and we look forward to them competing against the best next year.
Volleyball
We have had an incredible year with our volleyball teams in the ISSFHK competition. 4 of our 6 teams made semi finals all competing in Division 1 against the best international schools in Hong Kong.
U20 Boys
The U20 boys have had a great season and qualified 2nd in their pool and played ICHK on Monday in their semi final. The boys played a great game but unfortunately went own. They then bounced back well to win the 3rd/4th playoff and finish 3rd for the season. A great achievement!
U16 Boys
The U16 boys team qualified first in their pool. They then played HKIS in the semi-final winning 2 sets to 0. They then played ICHK in the final and performed very well winning the match and the Division 1 title. An amazing result for the team and all their hard work and effort over the season has produced great results.
U16 Girls
The U16 girls have had a great season and finished 2nd in pool play. They had a hard fought semi final against SIS narrowly going down in each set for a 2-0 loss. They bounced back with a strong performance against CIS winning 2-0 and claiming third place. A really strong performance from this group.
U14 Boys
The U14 boys played some superb volleyball during the year. They finished pool play with a 7 win 1 loss record. They played a tough semi final against a very good HKIS team. After losing the first set, the team rallied winning the second 2 sets to have a 2-1 win and progress to the final. Playing three sets may have fatigued the team a little. They played a great game in the final but went down 2-0 to IS, the top qualifier from pool play. This is a great group of young volleyballers and the future looks bright with this team.
Football
The U14 girls football team had their finals day On Wednesday Oct 30th. They finished second in their pool and played AISHK in their semi final. AISHK were a very strong team and had some great players. Our girls fought very hard but went down 5-0. They then bounced back exceptionally well and beat a very good Kellett side 2-0 in the playoff match, with Amber Ng scoring twice. This is the first U14 girls team we have had entered for a few years and they are a young side that will be back next year looking to go even better. Well done on a great season.
Rugby
The A Grade boys and girls played in their finals this week at Kings Park.
The A grade boys had a strong semi final against South Island school winning 17-0. They then played a very good Kellett team in the final. The boys gave it their all but came up short. Well done to this team for finishing second with what is predominantly a team of year 12s and so will get another go next year.
The A grade girls team came up against a very good South Island sie who a litetred with HK representatives. It was always going to be a tough ask and SIS proved too strong. They then played Kellett in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. The girls fought well in this game but unfortunately fell short.
Both teams will now turn their attention to the annual Bill Williams schools tournament on Nov 20th.
A big congratulations to all the teams above. Some outstanding results and you all can be very proud of your efforts.
