Principal's Message
Dear KGV Families,
As the term gains momentum, this week has certainly been an exciting and engaging one. We welcomed future KGV students to the campus last Friday, and it was wonderful to see them quickly embrace the culture and vibrancy of the school. Lion Rock provided a showcase of so many talented musicians as the hall was transformed into a concert venue, and it was great to see so many parents joining this celebration of music.
We also enjoyed colleagues from West Island School visiting us as they observed learning across a range of our classrooms. Their focus was on our strategic priority of ensuring each student is ‘Known, Heard, Safe and Successful.’ Amongst their reflections, they noted how our teachers build a strong sense of belonging through knowing each student well, the high level of engagement by developing effective approaches to learning, and the personalisation that comes from giving the students the opportunity to reflect on their learning and be supported through their next steps.
It is our commitment to bring such approaches to each lesson every day, and by providing such positive conditions for learning the students have every opportunity to be their own remarkable.
Have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Year 7 Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week the Music Department met with interested parents about our strong Music Academy programme. It was wonderful to see so many Year 7 parents and students attending the session and hearing about the opportunities provided by this programme for students who are fortunate to join. This is just one of the many CAS opportunities which KGV students have to choose from to enrich their learning opportunities. We will continue to review our range of activities plus analyse the sign-up rate amongst students to see if we can encourage more students to get involved in Creative, Active and Sporting activities at KGV.
In a couple of weeks, students will be signing up for their Year 8 Challenge Week activity. Information will be shared with parents and students regarding the trips and activities open to Year 8s.
Thank you for your continuing support in helping your child, our student, to develop strong self-management and effective organisational skills. We have definitely noticed a decline in lost items and fewer students arriving at school with incorrect uniforms and missing books and resources for lessons.
Have a great weekend.
Year 8 & 9 Message
The Vice Principal swap that has led me to be at KGV after five years as Vice Principal for Teaching and Learning at Island School has meant that my new role as VP for Year 8 and 9 involves a steep learning curve as I spend more time supporting students with their day to day challenges. I am very much looking forward to getting into more classrooms next week so that I can delve into how our students experience the Middle Years Programme. Thank you to those of you that have reached out to talk to me about your child’s specific needs or simply to welcome me to KGV. I have truly appreciated the warm and supportive nature of this school community.
This week at school has been a whirlwind of activity, each day brought new challenges and opportunities to learn, from engaging discussions in class on how our students are managing exam pressure to collaborative projects like developing the agenda for International Women's Day. It is wonderful to see the students engage in so many activities outside the classroom, like the wealth of talent displayed at Lion Rock last evening, whilst continuing to keep their academic focus.
Year 9 students will be engaging in the next phase of their Community Project on Wednesday 19th February .The aim of the first Follow-Up Day on Wednesday will be to refine some of the student’s thinking and begin to plan how they might take action.
The focus of the follow-up day will be to:
To collaborate with their group and reflect on the strengths/skills each member has
To use the PESTEL analysis tool to research more about their identified need/community
To understand the different types of possible service and consider what action is possible
Ask a ChatBot for help
To conduct primary research related to their project
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.
Year 10 & 11 Message
In assembly this week we congratulated the Year 11 students on successfully completing their mock exams. We acknowledged how challenging this has been and how we had observed them being prepared, organised and focused. They are acting as excellent role models for our Year 10 students.
Mr Kent shared his marathon journey over the last 19 years and his goal of a sub-3-hour time. He connected this to any task that takes perseverance and commitment over a long time, drawing parallels with their study and revision throughout the two-year GCSE course and their goals for examinations.
We also talked about how the attitudes and behaviours they exhibit ripple out through the community and affect everyone else and how the positive leadership and supportive behaviours we have been witnessing benefit everyone.
Year 11 students will receive a mock exam report summary next week that will outline the actions they need to take to be most successful in their final exams. You can access the dates for their final exams here. A more detailed timetable with venues and exact times will be published later this term.

U14 Football
The C Grade football team have begun their HKSSF campaign after a strong performance in the ISSFHK Division 1 championship. Raphael Yuan, discussed their ISSFHK performances. ‘We played really well considering the minimal time to train and come together as a team. We unfortunately fell one place short of the playoffs, despite beating the first placed team.’ When asked about their chances for HKSSF, he said ‘Our team for HKSSF is looking really strong, with many new players who did not join for ISSFHK. Even though the competition will be much tougher, I am sure we can achieve a high placing.’
The HKSSF competition will see the team play against some of the leading football schools in Hong Kong including DBS and WIS. It will be a tough competition but the players all reported that it is great to play against the best schools in high performing situations.
Although winning is an important motivating factor, Raphael reported that the team also wants to gel together better knowing that they will be playing alongside each other in the years to come through KGV. Aryan Ramchandani also reported that he hopes the team play to the best of their ability as this will bring success.
The team has had one HKSSF fixture so far, having a close fought draw with TSIS 1-1. Their next fixture is against YWC on Tuesday Feb 18th then followed by DBS on Wednesday March 12th and we wish the team the best of luck for these matches and the ones to follow.
