Principal's Message
Dear KGV Families,
Developing and maintaining a love for reading is so important for our children. As well as helping to develop a wider vocabulary to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding, it will build communication skills, improve memory and sharpen critical thinking. Furthermore, by engaging with a variety of texts, students will be able to develop their sense of empathy by considering a range of perspectives.
Next week, KGV will have a range of activities to support our ‘Read-a-Thon’ week. This will include opportunities to ‘Drop Everything and Read’ where all teachers and students will spend 15 minutes reading together. I would encourage our whole community to participate as we highlight the importance of reading. This could include talking to your children about your favourite book and asking what they are reading, through to finding opportunities at home where your family ‘Drops Everything and Reads.’
We will also have an important milestone for our Year 9 students on Monday as they graduate from the MYP and share their work through their Community Project exhibitions. This is always an exciting event where the students share the impact of the action they have taken, and we look forward to welcoming our Year 9 families.
Thank you for your ongoing support and have a wonderful weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum

Year 7 Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We have one more week to go for our Phone Pouch trial. I have been so proud of the Year 7 students and their attitude towards and responsiveness to this trial. The campus is a much livelier place with students interacting, playing games and talking to one another without the distraction of their phones. End of Trial questionnaires have been sent out to all stakeholders, and the Senior Leadership Team will draw on all feedback to make a decision about phones for the next academic year.
Next week is our KGV Read-a-thon. There are lots of activities planned for students to pick up physical books and spend time losing themselves in the world of the written word. We have a Drop-Everything-And-Read time planned for mid-week and opportunities for students to get involved with celebrating books.
Have a good weekend.

KGV Careers & H.E. Team
We are pleased to share the success of our recent Year 9 Community Project, an important service and action initiative that allowed students to learn about our community and serve its needs to the best of their ability. This project provided a real-world opportunity to demonstrate their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills while developing a deeper sense of empathy and understanding of their roles in both local and global contexts.
After an extensive research and planning stage, groups took action in a variety of different ways. Some through direct action in their community, some collected goods for local organisations and others ran advocacy campaigns to raise awareness on important issues. Additionally, during ACTION Week, students organised fundraising events that raised over $30,000 for various good causes. This achievement not only reflects their commitment but also enhances their understanding of their roles within both local and global communities.
All that is left for the students is to present to their peers about their entire project journey and hold an exhibition for parents on Monday 16th June.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this meaningful project and made a positive impact!

KGV Readathon: June 16th - 20th
The English Faculty is very excited to share that, next week, KGV will be hosting its first annual Readathon event. This will be a week-long celebration of reading, and an opportunity for students - and staff! - to use their habit of reading to raise money for our school charities.
Participants will be looking for sponsors: willing supporters who will pledge to give donations per page or book read. The goal is to read, and raise, as much as possible, and there will be a celebration for those who do the most of each! We’d be grateful if families could support students participating, whether through sponsorship or through encouraging more conversations about reading at home this week.
Alongside fundraising, the week will also include a range of other literary events. There will be writing workshops and author talks run by both the English and Chinese departments, literary adaptation workshops led by IB and BTEC Art students, and our beloved banyan tree will be transformed into a reading hub all week. There will also be a surprise ‘drop everything and read’ event, where all lessons will pause while the whole community takes out books to read - so please help us encourage your children to carry a book with them!
If you have any questions, or thoughts about the week ahead, please feel free to reach out to either the Head of the English Faculty Ms Shannon Kavanagh (shannon.kavanagh@kgv.ed.hk), or to the faculty’s Literacy Coordinator and the lead organiser of the Readathon, Ms Kaisa Tengvall (kaisa.tengvall@kgv.edu.hk).
Thank you for your support - and happy reading!
The KGV Careers Office coordinates all our student references and grade summaries, including potential exit & summer programmes.
School references for higher education application process for Year 12 and Year 13 are handled in a different process. There is no need to make a separate request. Instead, students should be working closely with their H.E. Counsellors so that we can support their applications appropriately.
To protect our students’ privacy, parental permission is required before KGV can release any student information to external parties. KGV will only fulfil requests once we have received this permission.
Parents need to submit a request for school reference or grade summary via this Google form.
References for Non-higher education purposes
Our normal lead time for teachers to work on references is four working weeks.
Requests for school references received by 6pm on 23 May should be fulfilled before the end of the school year.
Requests received after this deadline will be processed, but we cannot guarantee completion before the summer break. Such requests are expected to be fulfilled upon the school's resumption in August.
Grade Summary
Parents should use their parent Lionel login to access semester summaries on their child's CCF page. Requests for grade summary will be processed in July, after the release of the 2024-25 Semester 2 summaries.
External Extension Programmes
If students are pursuing external extension programmes outside of KGV, they should read and follow the information on this website.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

NETBALL
The U12 and U14 netball teams all made the finals for their respective divisions.
The U12A team had a tough semi final against a strong Kellett side. The team played with 6 players and played an amazing game and heart breakingly went down by one point 17-16. They then had another strong game in the 3rd/4th playoff and won comfortably to finish in 3rd place.
The U12B netball team had a tough semi final against Hong Kong Academy but were on the right side of the board winning 10-9 in over time. They then took on the top team of the league Island School and played a great game but unfortunately came up short. The team still had a great season and should be proud of finishing in 2nd place.
The U14 team came up against a very good ISF team in their semi final. ISF proved too strong for KGV, however, the team bounced back well in their playoff match winning 23-20 over DBIS to claim the bronze medal.
Well done to all our netball teams on fantastic seasons.
TOUCH RUGBY
We had 4 touch rugby teams entered in competitions this year.
The U14 boys were a very young team made up of mostly year 7 and year 8 students competing in Div 1. They competed well during the season but missed out a spot in the finals. A lot of players made great progress and this team will be back next year in a stronger position.
The U14 girls had an enjoyable season. The girls worked really hard in trainings and developed their skills well. Playing in division 1 they came up against some strong teams. But they never gave up and always kept positive within their games. The highlight of the year being a win over semi finalists WIS. This team is also young and most girls will be back for another season next year.
The U20B team competed in Division 2 and was made up of year 10s competing against mostly year 12s or older. They had a great season winning 3 out of 4 pool games and finishing 2nd in the league. They had an exceptional game against ISF in the semi final, winning in golden point drop off. They then played AIS in the final. The game was back and forth and went to 3 v 3 drop off, where unfortunately AIS managed to score to win the match. This team made huge strides in their skills this year and hopefully they will be back again to challenge for the title.
The U20A team competed in division 1 against the best touch schools in HK. They played well in round robin games, finishing with 2 wins and 1 draw, and went to finals as top qualifier. They played an outstanding game in the semi final beating ICHK 13-3 and came up against a very well drilled CIS team in the final. It was a close match for the duration of the game but CIS proved to be to strong with a great game structure and speed of play. They team competed well but eventually went down 6-2.
It was a great year for touch rugby with more teams than we have ever entered. We hope to see the programme continue to grow next year.
FOOTBALL
The U12 football team had their finals day last week on a very wet Wednesday. The team has a great season during pool play finishing with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss which was to the eventual winners of the competition VSA. In finals day the boys played AISHK in a very tightly fought contest. Despite the best efforts of the players, KGV unfortunately went down 2-1. The players bounced back for their playoff match and won comfortably over Harrow 5-1 to finish 3rd. This was a great result for a young team and football at KGV is in a strong place.
