Principal's Message
Dear KGV Families,
This week we have been focusing on the role of the tutor at KGV, which aligns with our priority of getting to know each student as a learner and a person. The tutor takes a holistic overview of each child’s learning and will hold 1:1 conversations at different times of the year to check progress and set targets. Within the daily 20 minute tutor time sessions, the aim is also to build community and ensure each student is well-organised and ready to learn. It is also important for students and parents to know the tutor is a key point of contact if they need support or have questions on their mind. Our intention is to continue to build our consistent approaches to tutor time, ensuring each student can be known, heard, safe and successful.
Students being heard has also been a focus point this week, with the KGV Student Council holding their first ‘ROAR’ session. The intention is to give students the opportunity to share their thoughts and suggestions so we continue to improve their experiences at school. The thoughtful and engaging dialogue was a testimony to the values our students bring to such discussions and the strong leadership demonstrated by the KGV Student Council. The next step will be to summarise the key points and bring these to the Senior Leadership Team for further consideration and actions.
Thank you for your ongoing support and have an enjoyable weekend ahead.
Best regards,
Mark Poulsum
Year 12 & 13 Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we embrace the new school year, I’d like to take a moment to highlight the progress our Senior students are making. With all class changes now finalised, students are settling into their routines and adapting to the academic challenges that lie ahead.
Years 12 and 13 can be particularly demanding, as students balance their coursework with social and emotional needs. During this time, it’s essential to remember that your child’s tutor is their first point of contact for any support they may need. The tutor's role is crucial in guiding students through this pivotal stage, acting not only as an academic advisor but also as a trusted mentor.
This week, our staff engaged in a collaborative session focused on the importance of the tutor's role. We explored both the formal responsibilities, such as taking attendance and punctuality, and the informal aspects that contribute significantly to student well-being. Tutors provide personalised guidance to create a nurturing environment that fosters success.
We encourage you to reach out to your child’s tutor if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to discuss your child's progress. Together, we can ensure that this year is both productive and fulfilling for our students.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to empower our young learners.
Have a lovely weekend
There are some relevant PTSA workshops coming soon. Please look out for registration for these through App messages from the PTSA.
Some students and families may be keen to get ideas about university offerings from around the globe. The ESF University fair will be held at KGV next Tuesday, 23rd September, from 15.30 to 18.30. Students and parents are welcome to attend. More information is available here:
Please keep an eye on the weather next week. In the case of school closure by the EDB, I will email all students and parents as soon as we know, and place a large red banner at the top of Lionel.
Values
We have launched a series of assemblies with students around our school values of Honesty, Courage and Empathy. We encourage you to have follow up conversations - share with your child how you act on these values in your life, and encourage them to reflect on the same.
Bathrooms and changing rooms
We share parents’ goals of safety and comfort for students in these spaces, and our values play an important role. Please continue to give feedback to tutors on your child’s experiences. Please also coach your child to support them to act with honesty, courage and empathy when concerns arise.
MYP Journals
A friendly reminder - please review your child’s journal weekly to see an overview of key dates and their reflections. Your review helps to show them that this is a valuable tool, and keeps you informed on the meaning they are making from their learning experiences
Student Council
Student council representatives have been selected and meetings are well underway. This is an important group who represent student perspectives - please encourage your children to connect and engage with their representatives.
