Principal's Message
Dear KGV Families,
It has been good to see our students smiling as they returned to KGV today after what has been a difficult few days across Hong Kong. We often talk about the need to be resilient and agile, and this is certainly evident in our student and staff communities. Our students continue to show the determination to succeed, and adapt to changing circumstances with the positivity that are the hallmarks of a KGVer. The ability of our staff to quickly change approaches with the intention to ensure students continue to make progress aligned with planned outcomes is also a source of pride.
I would like to share a particular thanks to KGV’s facilities team who worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to ensure we were ready to return to school on Friday.
I am also thankful for the ongoing support of our parent community. I recognise the frequent weather-interruptions this half-term can be a source of frustration and anxiety, but please be assured our teachers will ensure students can still complete work in a timely fashion and continue to provide additional support if needed.
Please be reminded that Wednesday 1st October is National Day Public Holiday and Friday 3rd October is the last day of this half-term. We will finish at our usual time of 3.20 pm next Friday.
I hope you enjoy a peaceful and restful weekend.
Best regards,
Mark
Year 10 & 11 Message
It was nice to be back in school today and good to see students wearing uniform proudly and getting to class on time. I can't believe the difference in the site from Wednesday evening to Friday morning. Our ground staff worked so hard yesterday to replace broken lockers, clear debris, patch windows and mop up flooding.
Next Monday we have the Australian Maths competition after school, good luck to those entering. We have the Year 11 NEA food assessment on Thursday and Friday for some students too.
Next Wednesday is a public holiday and then half-term break runs from Monday 6th to Friday 10th October.
Years 7, 8 & 9 Message
Thank you
A huge thank you to our parent community for your partnership and support as we navigated the uncertainties of the adverse weather this week. Your understanding has been invaluable as our staff balanced continuity of learning, safety of their own homes and loved ones, and the rapid clean up efforts to resume face-to-face learning today.
Key Dates
Wednesday 1st October - Public Holiday - no school
Thursday 2nd October - Year 8 and 9 assembly
Friday 3rd October - Final day before half-term break
Monday 13th October - Staff CPD Day - no school for students
Tuesday 14th October - School resumes for students
Half-term reflections
The half-term is a great time to check in with your student on how their learning has started this week, and a few tools can help you with these conversations:
MYP Journals - check for your child’s use of this journal for recording key dates and highlights of their learning
ATL Skills Check - in Empower, students in Years 7 and 9 have completed ATL Skills Check using the BrainTools platform. They can share their individual tool kits you, with insights on the skills they are strong in, as well as areas for growth.
For any questions on the journals or Empower, please reach out to MYP Coordinator, Rowan Turner (turner1@kgv.hk)
Year 12 & 13 Message
Dear Parents,
As part of KGV's ongoing commitment to child protection and safeguarding education, we want to remind you about the important topic of AI and deepfakes. A deepfake is a manipulated video or image that replaces one person's likeness with another, making it challenging to determine its authenticity.
Originally designed for entertainment, this technology has become widely accessible, leading to potential misuse, such as fake advertisements and inappropriate images involving individuals of all ages.
It's crucial to note that in Hong Kong, creating or sharing indecent or inappropriate images—whether of real people or computer-generated—is a criminal offense, punishable by law.
If your child encounters a deepfake or is affected by such material, we encourage them to seek support from trusted adults at school, such as their tutor or Head of Year. They can also report the incident to the authorities, as the harm caused can be significant. For further assistance in removing such content online, resources like Ta-DA are available at https://rainlily.org.hk/ibsv/tada.
BTEC Creative Media
Congratulations to Mr. Huda and the following students for their outstanding achievement.
Candice CASTILLO [13R24]
Reia KWAN [13C21]
Dylan MOORE [13R25]
The films have been shortlisted for the Film Stylo 2025 competition. This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud that nine out of the ten shortlisted films came from our very own BTEC Creative Media students. This recognition is a testament to the student's creativity, dedication, and technical skill.
We are so excited to see your film, along with the other shortlisted entries, at the special screening on 11th October. It is a fantastic opportunity for your work to be showcased and celebrated by the wider community. Once again, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. We look forward to celebrating with you at the screening and are excited to see what you will accomplish next.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
